Existing affordable housing developments do not have adequate room to accommodate the homeless population.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The nonprofit Safe Time in East Bay works to place homeless college students and families into residents\u2019 spare bedrooms for up to a six-month period.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cThis is something that someone can do when they just feel that despair of \u2018oh my gosh, I just can\u2019t stand seeing these poor people on the streets near my home,&#8217;\u201d the nonprofit\u2019s director, Christi Carpenter, told the <em>Mercury News<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/span>Since 2017, the organization has placed upwards of 60 people \u2013 a far cry from the tens of thousands living on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Zach Stein and his wife took in a struggling young woman through the program in 2020, allowing her to stay in a spare bedroom, according to the <em>Mercury News<\/em>.&nbsp;<span>\u201cIn some ways, it was really weird,\u201d Stein said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The couple recently had a baby and is open to taking in another homeless person in the future. They were able to purchase their home after receiving an inheritance and aim to share the \u201cgood luck\u201d with those struggling, the<em> Mercury News<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cBeing in a position to do that, especially in a place like the Bay Area,\u201d Stein told the outlet. \u201cIt felt really important to us to find ways to open that up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Richmond Mayor Tom Butt (D) is working with the Rotary Club to pair vagrants with landlords who will take them in, the <em>Mercury News<\/em> reports. \u201cThe small program will be funded entirely by private donations, and landlords will get one year\u2019s rent in advance,\u201d the outlet writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the carrot,\u201d Butt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10491511\/Homelessness-San-Francisco-bad-people-asked-homeless-person-spare-room.html\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>, noting landlords would be paid the market rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we have had some landlords come forward and offer it lower, as they want to participate,\u201d the mayor added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Mail<\/em> asked Butt if residents expressed safety concerns when it comes to welcoming a homeless person into their home or property. Butt\u2019s response was that residents\u2019 worries regarding homeless people\u2019s struggles supersede safety concerns, the outlet reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cThey are more concerned with the homeless camps,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople want to see solutions, and want to be part of the solution.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Another nonprofit, the Homecoming Project, houses former prisoners. \u201cUsing donations, the nonprofit pays hosts in Alameda and Contra Costa counties $30 a day to house someone in a spare bedroom for six months,\u201d the <em>Mercury News<\/em> reports. \u201cEach former inmate is matched with a case manager to help them find a job and save money for a permanent home.\u201d The organization does not house sex offenders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Homecoming Project has placed 70 former inmates in homes, none of whom have gone back to jail or prison, according to the <em>Mercury News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On Thursday at 3:00 p.m. San Francisco\u2019s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing will <a href=\"https:\/\/hsh.sfgov.org\/events\/landlord-appreciation-event\/?occurrence=2022-02-10\">host<\/a> a seminar to urge landlords to rent to homeless individuals. The local government will foot the bill, the <em>Mail<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The seminar comes as an estimated 8,000 in San Francisco are homeless, which is up from the estimated 5,600 a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Richie Greenberg, the only Republican to run in San Francisco\u2019s 2018 mayoral election, called the plans both \u201cunrealistic\u201d and \u201ccreepy\u201d while speaking with the <em>Mail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe sheer number of people, and the reasons behind them being homeless, means it won\u2019t have an impact,\u201d Greenberg said. Instead of such programs, the former mayoral candidate says there is a need for both drug rehabilitation centers and ways to care for mentally ill, individuals so they do not harm others or themselves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Greenberg noted that the idea to place homeless people in private residences and vacant apartments have been around for a while.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is not a new idea \u2013 it\u2019s been floated for many years,\u201d he told the <em>Mail<\/em>. \u201cParticularly in San Francisco \u2013 it goes back to freedom, and the summer of love, and hippies and communal houses, with strangers crashing on your couch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not an unheard-of concept. But we\u2019re not talking about flower children. Now it gets a bit absurd,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that such high rates of mental illness and drug addiction in the homeless community thin out the number of potential candidates to place in the housing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA very high percentage of San Francisco\u2019s homeless people are homeless because they are addicted to drugs or mentally ill. So the number of candidates is going to be quite limited,\u201d Greenberg explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt won\u2019t be the mentally ill or drug addicts, who account for around 60-70 percent,\u201d he continued.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He noted that finding a roommate the traditional way is safer as it allows for vetting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you are looking for a roommate, that\u2019s one thing \u2013 you can check references, and talk to people at their previous places,\u201d Greenberg said. \u201cBut these are not that kind of people.
