As a recent story in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2021\/09\/how-hollywood-sold-out-to-china\/620021\/\">The Atlantic<\/a> put it, \u201cChina has simply become too lucrative for Hollywood to resist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Examples of this assertion abound. Disney rewrote a major character in \u201cDoctor Strange\u201d to become a white woman rather than a Tibetan man to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/27\/world\/asia\/china-doctor-strange-tibet.html\">avoid triggering<\/a> Chinese Communist Party censors. The studio later took pains to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/news\/disney-mulan-credits-xinjiang-explanation-1234798833\/#:~:text=Disney%20made%20global%20headlines%20when,have%20deemed%20a%20cultural%20genocide.\">offer special thanks<\/a> to Xinjiang authorities for their permission to film \u201cMulan\u201d in the region despite its notorious record of human rights violations against the Uyghurs. Meanwhile, on the streaming front, it proactively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/22807895\/disney-plus-get-back-beatles-simpsons-censorship\">scrubbed<\/a> several Simpsons episodes from its Hong Kong platform.<\/p>\n<p>But the Mouse House is hardly alone in catering to the Middle Kingdom. Paramount infamously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=paramount+china+maverick&amp;rlz=1C1RXQR_enUS947US947&amp;oq=paramount+china+maverick&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j33i160l2.3477j0j15&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">removed<\/a> the Taiwanese and Japanese flag patches on Tom Cruise\u2019s iconic jacket for the Top Gun sequel \u201cMaverick\u201d in an effort to appeal to the Chinese market. John Cena, star of Universal\u2019s \u201cF9\u201d publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/news\/john-cena-taiwan-china-f9-1234981384\/\">groveled<\/a> to communist China for correctly stating that Taiwan is a country during his promotion of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>And that, experts say, is nothing to the films that never get made because the studio system judges that something in the script <em>might<\/em> keep a film from accessing Chinese ticket buyers. Studios self-censoring to please Xi Jinping has become the norm.<\/p>\n<p>Enter DW Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the conversation surrounding the conservative media company\u2019s decision to launch a film production division has centered on how it has thrown off the shackles of agenda-driven filmmaking on the domestic front. While the rest of Hollywood is instituting race-based hiring quotas and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) tests for scripts, in addition to their usual left-wing politicking, DW Entertainment is simply focused on the business of telling riveting stories.<\/p>\n<p>But China\u2019s stranglehold on Hollywood has given the fledgling studio another opportunity to differentiate itself from the established Tinsel Town competition. While scripts may get passed over by other studios due to themes that champion individual achievement over collective action (a message that the CCP is always interested in pushing), DW Entertainment is ready to pick up such storylines.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly evident in its first original production, \u201cShut In.\u201d In the film, Jessica (Rainey Qualley) a young, single mother, must overcome drug addiction and draw on her Christian faith to fight back against a drug dealer who wants to harm her children. Both Jessica\u2019s self-reliance and the strength she finds in religion would be just the sort of content CCP censors would flag. And it\u2019s part of the reason mainstream studios are routinely screening out scripts that highlight such values. Yet it\u2019s exactly these kinds of themes, built on the Western values of rugged individualism and autonomy, that American audiences crave.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/when-filmmakers-ignore-the-political-right-is-that-financially-wrong-4145975\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> wrote in March of last year, the movie industry has been leaving tens of millions of dollars on the table as it ignores Americans who aren\u2019t interested in either left-wing moralizing or storylines watered-down with China in mind. \u201cAt the moment, there\u2019s little Hollywood content that directly appeals to [red state audiences].
