The agency is testing multiple models.<\/p>\n<p>DHS\u2019s Science and Technology Directorate (S&amp;T)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/science-and-technology\/news\/02\/01\/feature-article-robot-dogs-take-another-step-towards-deployment\">announced<\/a> earlier this month that it is testing multiple Automated Ground Surveillance Vehicles (ASGVs) for use by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and Border Patrol agents. The vehicles, referred to as robotic dogs, are developed as a force multiplier in a similar fashion to the agency\u2019s use of drones and other surveillance technology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA big part of our job here at S&amp;T is to understand the current operational needs of our DHS components and find innovative technologies to support them,\u201d Agent Brett Becker of the CBP Innovation Team (INVNT) stated. \u201cWe are keenly aware that the CBP mission is broad and the risks to personnel are many, and that\u2019s why S&amp;T\u2019s work to fill capability gaps is so critical. And that\u2019s specifically why we think that the robot dog solution is such a great fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd disagrees. Judd told Breitbart Texas in a phone interview that \u201cIt\u2019s a gimmick.\u201d He said the Biden Administration is desperate to show improvements at the border. \u201cI just don\u2019t see it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>S&amp;T officials said the development team worked with the U.S. Army\u2019s Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate to prepare the \u201crobot dogs\u201d to engage in evaluation testing. Testing reportedly took place in the El Paso region to simulate \u201charsh environments\u201d including heat and low oxygen conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Judd explained he has only heard rumors of testing, rather than actual demonstrations. \u201cThis is not even close to being ready to put into operation,\u201d the union president explained. He said he prefers aerial drones to ground-based robotics.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart Texas reached out to DHS officials for more information about testing and implementation plans.
