Following the summer of 2020, ESPN began allowing its talent to openly discuss social issues on air.&nbsp;<\/span><span>It was a complete reversal from ESPN\u2019s edict a few years earlier, instructing its employees to \u201cstick to sports,\u201d keeping their political beliefs off of ESPN\u2019s airwaves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, according to a new investigation by Project Veritas, not all is peachy inside of ESPN\u2019s studios.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tuesday night, Project Veritas released a video from an ESPN whistleblower, complete with conversations between the whistleblower and&nbsp;multiple ESPN employees.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Studio Operator Trevor Adams, who recorded the video and audio, shares an email he sent to the head of ESPN, detailing \u201cracism,\u201d \u201charassment and discrimination,\u201d among other issues at ESPN.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The email was flagged by ESPN as a \u201c<\/span><span>security threat,\u201d and the company sent police to Adams\u2019 home to investigate, according to Project Veritas. Adams said his email to ESPN detailing issues in the workplace was met with support from many of his colleagues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA lot of people were cheering me on,\u201d Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectveritas.com\/news\/espn-on-air-talent-discuss-toxic-workplace-environment-in-whistleblowers\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cA lot of people said, \u2018We\u2019re glad you sent this.&nbsp; We hope something comes of it. We don\u2019t think it will, but we\u2019re glad that finally someone spoke up.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Adams told Project Veritas that he came forward because he has \u201cwitnessed lots of discrimination, racism\u201d while working at ESPN.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The video also shows ESPN reporter Alyson Lang detailing conversations she had about the company having too many white hosts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI know the comments that have been made to me at work and the conversations that have been had in front of me at work, like, I mean just blatantly racist s***,\u201d Lang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectveritas.com\/news\/espn-on-air-talent-discuss-toxic-workplace-environment-in-whistleblowers\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cJust blatantly, like, complaining to me that we have three white hosts, and I\u2019m like, \u2018What do you want me- do you want me to leave?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt got to the point a couple weeks ago where I had to say to somebody, \u2018Do you not know my work ethic?\u2019 We\u2019ve known each other for four years,\u201d Lang continued. \u201cDo I not deserve to be here? \u2026 At the end of the day, they\u2019re choosing between us and social media reaction.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Erik Swanson, ESPN Senior Video Editor, said ESPN shouldn\u2019t \u201ccomment on anything\u201d regarding social issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI can\u2019t look to them to do the right thing when it comes to social issues,\u201d Swanson said. \u201cWe [ESPN] don\u2019t know what we\u2019re talking about, and we shouldn\u2019t comment on anything about it company wide. There\u2019s no reason. We\u2019re [ESPN] not in this social sh*t business. If you want to look for common comfort on it, how about this? Go to church or read the f***ing newspaper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Adams also accuses an ESPN employee of treating him differently for being a \u201cRepublican or Trump supporter.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><span>It\u2019s been a tumultuous few months at ESPN, who found themselves in a major controversy regarding two of their on-air talents.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In July 2021, The New York Times reported on a private conversation between ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols and longtime LeBron James advisor Adam Mendelsohn that took place in July 2020. Nichols was covering the NBA restart while in the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida, at the time of the conversation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the conversation with Mendelsohn, which was inadvertently recorded, Nichols was discussing how she was recently informed by ESPN management that she would not be hosting ESPN\u2019s pregame and postgame shows for the 2020 NBA Finals. Maria Taylor \u2014 a black woman and reporter \u2014 would be given the assignment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world \u2014 she covers football, she covers basketball,\u201d Nichols <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/04\/sports\/basketball\/espn-rachel-nichols-maria-taylor.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> on July 13, 2020. \u201cIf you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity \u2014 which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it \u2014 like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI just want them to go somewhere else \u2014 it\u2019s in my contract, by the way; this job is in my contract in writing,\u201d Nichols continued.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nichols had not turned off the video camera placed in her room in order for her to perform her duties as host of \u201cThe Jump,\u201d a popular NBA program on ESPN. Her conversation with Mendelsohn was recorded and sent to a server at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of the people who had access to the recording on ESPN\u2019s server, one recorded it to a cell phone and shared with others. The recording eventually reached ESPN executives and set off a firestorm at the network, with many feeling that Nichols should be punished for what she said. The Times wrote: \u201cThey were especially upset by what they perceived as Nichols\u2019s expression of a common criticism used by white workers in many workplaces to disparage nonwhite colleagues \u2014 that Taylor was offered the hosting job only because of her race, not because she was the best person for the job.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nichols and ESPN came to an agreement in January, <\/span><span>officially ending her time at the four-letter network. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the New York Post reported that Nichols was making between $1.5-$2 million per year, and had one year remaining on her contract.
