Interior spokeswoman Melissa Schwartz responded, \u201cMore than happy for you to not write,\u201d and indeed, no story was written after the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>A separate email shows the Times reporter going so far as to apologize to DOI for presumably inquiring about the subject matter, writing to the government, \u201cSorry we are so annoying w oil &amp; gas lease Qs. Could you give a call?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other emails raise questions about the left-wing outlet\u2019s relationship with DOI. New York Times writer Elizabeth Williamson is shown to be pleading with Schwartz for a sit-down interview with Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. Schwartz initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/02\/us\/politics\/deb-haaland-interior.html\">denied<\/a> the request but the writer seemingly insinuated that the coverage would be positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think it\u2019ll look a bit odd since so many of her colleague[s] sent and friends have spoken w[ith] me,\u201d the writer emailed in May 2021. \u201cThis sometimes happens on tough stories but rather a mystery here! \u2026 I still hope she will reconsider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two months later, in June, Williamson ran a profile on Haaland that was notably friendly. DOI approved it, The Federalist noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to say that I thought the profile turned out really lovely,\u201d Schwartz wrote to Williamson on the day the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/02\/us\/politics\/deb-haaland-interior.html\">article<\/a> was published. \u201cThe Secretary asked me to pass on her appreciation and gratitude that you traveled to speak with Pueblo women,\u201d she wrote soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Former Trump administration members who worked on environment issues \u2014 who spoke to The Federalist \u2014 were taken aback by the emails. They were \u201caghast\u201d given how the Times treated them far differently. Mandy Gunasekara, the Trump-era chief of staff for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), highlighted how \u201creporters [would] straight up tell us they wouldn\u2019t come cover events because they would never write a positive story about the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, an unnamed Trump official claimed Davenport was \u201cawful\u201d to work with. The official said the reporter fired off deadlines only lasting 30 minutes for comment, \u201cif that.\u201d Other officials who worked under Trump pointed to an incident in 2018 when the Times would not attend a briefing held by the EPA on improved air quality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with the New York Times you knew they were going to do \u2018gotcha journalism\u2019 because it would be unfathomable that the Trump administration would clean up the environment and improve public health,\u201d an unnamed Trump official for the EPA and DOI, told The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p><i>Send story tips to Gabe Kaminsky at&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"mailto:gekaminsky@protonmail.com\"><i>gekaminsky@protonmail.com<\/i><\/a><i>.
