The resulting traffic jam spread through Windsor and eventually reached across the border into the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reporting from Windsor, Ontario. Police advised motorists, particularly those driving commercial vehicles, to reroute to an entirely different bridge, the Bluewater in Sarnia, if they needed to cross the U.S. border.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>A tunnel from Windsor to Detroit was also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/ambassador-bridge-protest-1.6342837\"><span>recommended<\/span><\/a><span> as an alternative by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is the scene at the Ambassador bridge crossing. There is no incoming traffic from the U.S. on the Ambassador Bridge and trucks are lined up for several kilometres to cross into Michigan. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cln0q3F8fk\">pic.twitter.com\/cln0q3F8fk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dan Janisse (@winstarjanisse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/winstarjanisse\/status\/1491096462679154688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Traffic was still reportedly slow and partially blocked on Tuesday, prompting a statement from the Detroit International Bridge Company, owners of the Ambassador Bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cInternational commerce needs to resume,\u201d said company chairman Matt Moroun.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Ambassador Bridge and the Moroun family sympathize with truck drivers and those caught up in this blockade. We recognize truck drivers are essential workers that work hard to deliver necessities to all of us and that the Canadian government has done a tremendous job with vaccine rates,\u201d Moroun said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Ambassador Bridge has a solemn obligation to facilitate safe and efficient international trade and travel. We encourage the appropriate officials to take prompt action to alleviate the situation as quickly as possible in a manner that reflects mutual respect,\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Rakesh Naidu was less sympathetic to the protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMany businesses have been through so much in the last two years. This couldn\u2019t come at a worse time. To constrict the border like this will impact everyone not just in Windsor, but Ontario and Canada. You have thousands of businesses that rely on the border and trade coming through. You have inventory based on just-in-time delivery,\u201d Naidu <a href=\"https:\/\/windsorstar.com\/news\/local-news\/protest-group-continues-to-cause-havoc-for-ambassador-bridge-traffic\">told<\/a> the <\/span><i><span>Windsor Star<\/span><\/i><span> on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAny disruption of supply can lead to shifts being canceled and if it continues, closing operations,\u201d Naidu cautioned. \u201cAll of that doesn\u2019t just impact the businesses in all the different sectors, but consumers like you and me. This is not just manufacturing, but goods we all consume as well, like fresh produce, or chemicals and fuel that we need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Writing at the <\/span><i><span>Toronto Sun<\/span><\/i> <span>on Tuesday, columnist Brian Lilley <a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-as-protest-hits-ambassador-bridge-pm-cant-simply-yell-racist-to-fix-this-growing-problem\">saw<\/a> the Ambassador Bridge protest as a possible turning point in the Freedom Convoy saga, because Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has no good answer to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWill Trudeau dismiss these people as racists like he does everyone else who disagrees with him? That\u2019s what Trudeau has done in the past with several people or groups opposed to him and it seems to be the only response he has to the protests in Ottawa,\u201d Lilley wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is all about politics and Trudeau\u2019s desire to pump up his base of supporters against the protesters, attach the protest movement to Conservatives, and reap the rewards with increased voter support if or when violent confrontation with the police takes place,\u201d he charged, contrasting Trudeau\u2019s confrontational and insulting attitude toward Canadian truckers with his support for Indian farm protesters last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat single bridge connecting Windsor to Detroit carries 27% of the total two-way trade between Canada and the United States. Yelling racist won\u2019t fix this problem.
