The photo in the Facebook image does not show the actual Stanford family.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/bSRHf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> shows a vintage picture of what appears to be an elderly couple, followed by a lengthy caption underneath the picture. The caption tells the story of a couple that allegedly approached Harvard to request a memorial for their deceased son, who had been studying at the campus before being killed. The president of the university purportedly turned down the request, prompting the couple to contemplate starting their own university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the university that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about,\u201d the caption stated in part, attributing the story to Forbes Magazine founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Malcolm-S-Forbes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story has been debunked by both Harvard and Stanford University. Stanford Magazine published an <a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordmag.org\/contents\/truth-and-lies-at-harvard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> in 1998 titled \u201cTruth and Lies at Harvard\u201d addressing the fabricated tale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account, of course, is wrong \u2014 and, in places, absurd,\u201d the article reads in part. \u201c[Leland Jr.] never enrolled at Harvard. His parents did visit Harvard President Charles Eliot, but only to get advice on endowing a university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A September 2001 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2001\/09\/bunk-in-faded-gingham.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> from Harvard Magazine also briefly debunked the lore, stating that the story is \u201ca canard.\u201d The piece also references Stanford\u2019s magazine article, adding that it hoped to be \u201can end to Harvardians wilting in confusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact could not find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Malcolm+Forbes+Stanford&amp;oq=Malcolm+Forbes+Stanford&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.7002j0j1&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">any credible evidence<\/a> linking the fabricated story to the founder of Forbes Magazine. It does not appear on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/search\/?q=Stanford%20University%20Harvard%20University&amp;sh=62ad0707279f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forbes<\/a> website.<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2019\/12\/16\/fact-check-pamela-karlan-trump-impeachment-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Do These Viral Photos Show The Stanford Law Professor Who Testified At The Impeachment Hearings?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The picture of the couple included in the Facebook post does not show the actual Stanford family. A reverse image search revealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/53102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photo<\/a>, found on the Museum of Modern Art\u2019s website, was taken by German photographer August Sander in 1912 and is titled \u201cFarming Couple\u2013Propriety and Harmony.\u201d The image was taken almost 20 years after Leland Stanford died, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Leland-Stanford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britannica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A real photo of the Stanford family, showing the three members dressed in fancy garments, can be seen on Stanford University\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/about\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History of Stanford<\/a>\u201d page.
