According to the <em>Times<\/em>, current legal and illegal immigration levels \u2014 more than 1.5 million legal immigrants and hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens arrive each year \u2014 are on pace to match and potentially outpace that record high.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Stated another way, foreign-born residents could begin to account for 3 in 20 of all U.S. residents. Already, the nation\u2019s foreign-born population continues to hit historic highs, now standing at <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Camarota\/Immigrant-Population-Hits-Record-462-Million-November-2021\">46.2 million<\/a>. Compare that figure to 1970, when the foreign-born population was just 9.6 million.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/CDUV1\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>As of December, immigrants represented 14.1 percent of the U.S. population<\/strong>, matching the peak of the decades-long immigration boom that began in the 1960s and <strong>approaching the record 14.8 percent seen in 1890<\/strong>, shortly before large numbers of Europeans began disembarking from vessels at Ellis Island. [Emphasis added]\n<p><strong>The foreign-born population is increasingly concentrated among middle-age groups<\/strong>, with a large number of immigrants having lived in the United States for many years. About 1 in 5 Americans between the ages of 40 and 64 was born overseas. And <strong>two-thirds of foreign-born residents have been in the country more than a decade<\/strong>, the census data shows. [Emphasis added]\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If immigration returns to even its relatively modest pre-pandemic pace, <strong>it is possible the share of Americans born overseas could reach the record 14.8 percent from 1890<\/strong>. [Emphasis added]\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_19804618\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-12.29.07-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19804618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-08-at-12.29.07-PM.png\" alt=\"Migration Policy Institute\" width=\"1586\" height=\"1166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Migration Policy Institute<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>U.S. Census Bureau data released last year showed that the nation\u2019s population has hit a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/21\/census-u-s-population-hits-331-9m-driven-mostly-by-legal-immigration\/\">331.9 million<\/a>, driven mostly by legal immigration levels that have gone unreduced in more than five decades.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the agency projected that overall immigration will bring the U.S. population to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/21\/census-u-s-population-hits-331-9m-driven-mostly-by-legal-immigration\/\">400 million<\/a> by 2060, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/04\/30\/census-one-in-six-residents-to-be-foreign-born-due-to-legal-immigration\/\">1 in 6 residents<\/a> will be foreign-born.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. population does not have to rapidly increase to record highs. In the past, legal immigration moratoriums&nbsp;have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2018\/09\/14\/immigration-moratorium-followed-last-period-of-record-u-s-foreign-born-population-levels\/\">implemented<\/a>.&nbsp;Research has shown that halting all immigration to the U.S. would stabilize the population to a comfortable 329 million residents in the next four decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>John Binder is a reporter for Breitbart News.
