These include ongoing pandemic issues and how the co-writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/matrix-resurrections-co-writers-aleksandar-hemon-and-da-1848234303\"><span>explicitly<\/span><\/a><span> wanted to \u201creclaim that trope\u201d of what taking the red pill really meant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, the co-producer is laying blame at the feet of Warner Bros. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/07\/matrix-producer-sues-warner-bros-over-low-ticket-sales\/?utm_source=NYPTwitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow&amp;utm_medium=SocialFlow\"><span>New York Post<\/span><\/a><span>, the production company claims the film\u2019s distributor breached their contract when they decided to release the film simultaneously in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. Now they\u2019re saying this is why \u201cResurrections\u201d was such a flop. The movie only pulled in a scanty $10.7 million opening weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Village Roadshow Entertainment Group\u2019s lawyers said in the suit that Warner Bros. rolling out a simultaneous release, which involved moving the release date from 2022 to December 2021, violated the terms of their agreement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWB\u2019s sole purpose in moving the release date of \u2018The Matrix Resurrections\u2019 forward was to create a desperately needed wave of year-end HBO Max premium subscriptions from what it knew would be a blockbuster film, despite knowing full well that it would decimate the film\u2019s box office revenue and deprive Village Roadshow of any economic upside that WB and its affiliates would enjoy,\u201d the suit reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The document goes on to allege Warner Bros. should have anticipated \u201crampant piracy\u201d that took place, which was expected because of \u201cdistributing this marquee picture on a streaming platform on the same day as its theatrical release.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The debate between streaming versus theatrical releases and how those two should be coordinated is ongoing. While \u201cSpiderman: No Way Home\u201d succeeded in huge box office sales despite not having a simultaneous streaming component, other films have been less successful at drawing people back into theaters as pandemic protocol has dragged on for two years now.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a statement for WSJ, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. has said that the production company has overstepped their contract\u2019s arbitration clause with the suit. They are confident that no wrongdoing took place when moving up the movie\u2019s release date.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a frivolous attempt by Village Roadshow to avoid their contractual commitment to participate in the arbitration that we commenced against them last week. We have no doubt that this case will be resolved in our favor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Further, Village Roadshow accused Warner Bros. of trying to cut them out of projects they\u2019ve already invested $4.5 billion into. The two companies collaborated on films including \u201cJoker\u201d and \u201cAmerican Sniper\u201d in addition to the \u201cMatrix\u201d franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWB has also been devising various schemes to deprive Village Roadshow of its continuing rights to co-own and co-invest in the derivative works from the films it co-owns,\u201d the suit continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Village Roadshow recently refused to give up the rights to a TV series based on the inspired \u201cEdge of Tomorrow.\u201d The suit stipulates that Warner Bros. \u201csaid the quiet part out loud: It will not allow Village Roadshow to benefit from any of its Derivative Rights going forward, despite the over $4.5 billion it has paid WB to make and distribute 91 films.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire\u2019s first original film, Shut In, will be premiering on Thursday, February 10th at 9pm ET on YouTube.
