It will be because of what Gu represents.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gu is an American, born and raised in San Francisco, California, but she\u2019s not skiing under the American flag in Beijing. Gu is representing the country of China in the 2022 Games.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, Gu made the announcement to ski for her mother\u2019s home country of China, making the news public in an Instagram post.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI have decided to compete for China in the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics,\u201d Gu wrote. \u201cThis was an incredibly tough decision for me to make. I am extremely thankful for U.S. Ski &amp; Snowboard and the Chinese Ski Association for having the vision and belief in me to make my dreams come true. I am proud of my heritage, and equally proud of my American upbringings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe opportunity to help inspire millions of young people where my mom was born, during the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help to promote the sport I love,\u201d she continued. \u201cThrough skiing, I hope to unite people, promote common understanding, create communication, and forge friendships between nations. If I can help to inspire one young girl to break a boundary, my wishes will have come true.<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByYTAs8AIH0\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Gu\u2019s decision to represent China comes at a time when relations between the U.S. and the communist country are perilous, at best. In the lead-up to the Olympics, most stories have focused on the location of the games, rather than the events and the athletes themselves. <\/span><span>In December, the Biden administration announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Games, citing the PRC\u2019s \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d and \u201congoing genocide\u201d as to why the U.S. would not be sending any official representation to Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During the Opening Ceremony last Friday, the Chinese government made the controversial decision to reportedly select a Chinese athlete with a Uyghur last name to do the honors. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/04\/sports\/olympics\/cauldron-lighting-opening-ceremony-uyghur-china.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>, the athlete was Dinigeer Yilamujiang, a cross-country skier with Uyghur roots.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With stories constantly circling regarding China\u2019s alleged human rights atrocities, Gu\u2019s decision to ski for her mother\u2019s home country has drawn criticism online, including from athletes within the sport.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is not my place to judge, but Eileen is from California, not from China, and her decision [to ski for China] seems opportunistic,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/01\/olympian-eileen-gu-competing-for-china-is-ruffling-us-skiers\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Jen Hudak, a former Winter X Games gold medalist for the USA women\u2019s team. \u201cI can\u2019t speak to what Eileen\u2019s Chinese heritage means to her and she has every right to do what she believes is best for her career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a January 2020 interview with the Associated Press, Gu\u2019s agent \u2014<\/span><span>&nbsp; Tom Yaps \u2014<\/span><span> made it clear that Gu understands she\u2019s under the microscope for her decision.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018Difficult\u2019 is the wrong word, but she weighed everything very heavily,\u201d Yaps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/winter-olympics-aspen-beijing-2020-tokyo-olympics-china-704725521f134c3b5aa55d7846d9844b\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp; \u201cAt the end of the day, she really feels she can make an impact in these young women\u2019s lives. She looked around and said, \u2018There are so many brilliant role models in the U.S. already,\u2019 and she felt her voice could really make an impact over there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To go along with her impressive skiing accomplishments, Gu was also signed by Victoria\u2019s Secret in July as the company attempts to rebrand.<\/p>\n<p><span>Gu has made it into the women\u2019s big air finals, which will take place on Tuesday.
