Goldberg forced us to take her seriously, even while her broad grin made us smile while confronting serious issues of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whoopi Goldberg went from a lark to a household name in record time. That\u2019s talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today, given her reign on television\u2019s factually challenged series, \u201cThe View,\u201d and some wildly ignorant takes, she\u2019s just another out-of-touch celebrity. That comedy rebel who charmed us all seems like a distant memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Her formative years resembled the American dream brought to glorious, imperfect life. Goldberg grew up poor and without a father for part of her childhood. She had a spark though, changing what she saw as a dull name to Whoopi Goldberg and hitting California to start a show business career.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She worked some odd jobs along the way, including a gig as a mortician\u2019s make-up artist, but her comic gifts couldn\u2019t be denied. Her off-Broadway program, \u201cThe Spook Show,\u201d drew the attention of famed Hollywood director Mike Nichols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou got something kid,\u201d and he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/tv\/whoopi-goldberg-breaks-talking-mike-nichols-article-1.2017875\">right<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The duo teamed for \u201cWhoopi Goldberg,\u201d the Broadway production that served as her Hollywood coming out party. The one-woman event caught Steven Spielberg\u2019s attention, and he cast Goldberg in 1985\u2019s \u201cThe Color Purple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A star, as they say, was born.&nbsp;<\/span><span>Goldberg missed out on an Oscar for her bravura turn in that Alice Walker adaptation, but it opened all the necessary doors in Tinsel Town. She headlined several \u201880s comedies from there, like \u201cJumpin\u2019 Jack Flash\u201d (1986) and \u201cFatal Beauty\u201d (1987) before flexing her dramatic skills via \u201cClara\u2019s Heart\u201d (1988) and \u201cThe Long Walk Home\u201d (1990).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Her serio-comic turn in 1990\u2019s \u201cGhost,\u201d one of the decade\u2019s biggest hits, snagged her the Oscar many thought she was denied five years earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldberg did it all from there, raising cash via the long-running \u201cComic Relief\u201d fundraising series, anchoring her own comedy franchise (\u201cSister Act\u201d) and proving versatile enough to be a constant Hollywood presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And then came \u201cThe View.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Barbara Walters\u2019 vision of a show where women led the way had entrenched itself in TV lore by the time Goldberg joined the show in 2007. Her show business legacy secure, \u201cThe View\u201d allowed her to share her background, her wisdom, with TV audiences five days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She replaced the combustible Rosie O\u2019Donnell as the show\u2019s moderator, bringing some stability with her. One of pop culture\u2019s few EGOT personalities \u2013 she owned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award \u2013 offered something unique to the talk show.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldberg\u2019s de factor liberalism made her a snug hit for \u201cThe View\u2019s\u201d ideological bent, but she rarely held her co-hosts\u2019 feet to the fire when necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And, at times, it seemed her common-sense veneer was just a mirage. Perhaps her most outrageous commentary involved disgraced director Roman Polanski. The auteur behind \u201cChinatown\u201d had drugged and raped a girl in 1975 and never fully paid for his actions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Polanski admitted to the incident, fleeing the country rather than facing the consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldberg, deep into a conversation about the matter during a 2009 \u201cView\u201d episode, described the assault as different than \u201crape-rape,\u201d despite all the evidence to the contrary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI know it wasn\u2019t rape-rape. It was something else but I don\u2019t believe it was rape-rape. He went to jail and and when they let him out he was like, \u2018You know what, this guy\u2019s going to give me a hundred years in jail. I\u2019m not staying.\u2019 So that\u2019s why he left.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Had those comments happened following the #MeToo revolution, she might have been given her walking papers. Instead, it was back to work as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At times, Goldberg still sounded like her old self, someone who understood the value of free speech for her craft. When Debra Messing and Eric McCormack suggested they wanted Trump-supporting artists to be outed, and discriminated against, Goldberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/whoopi-goldberg-joy-behar-blacklist\/\">lashed out<\/a> at the \u201cWill &amp; Grace\u201d duo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In recent years, though, Goldberg echoed her far-Left co-hosts. Even worse? The wackier the show became, the more Goldberg allowed the conversations to run off the rails.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As the de-facto leader, Goldberg couldn\u2019t get her fellow hosts to stop talking over each other, for starters.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Goldberg also didn\u2019t give conservative co-host Meghan McCain much protection during the latter\u2019s four-year run. In fact, the two would often spar, on air, in ways that seemed inappropriate for a show meant to elevate women in media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Oscar winner had once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/flashback-whoopi-mccain-slavery\/\">tied<\/a> McCain\u2019s father to the return of slavery \u2026 to the Senator\u2019s face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDid you say you wanted strict constitutionalists? Should I worry about being a slave? A return to slavery? Because there are things in the Constitution that (should have changed.)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You could argue Goldberg\u2019s downright spiral intensified during the Trump years. A recent exchange found her describing the Republican party in ways that should shame any professional broadcaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Not Goldberg, apparently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is part of the big plan to control what happens in America, I believe,\u201d Goldberg said of the GOP. \u201cYou take those voting rights away, people are gonna be so angry, but there will be nothing they can do about it because we\u2019re in charge. Next thing comes the women. We\u2019re gonna take your rights away, just like we\u2019re taking X, Y and Z, because they\u2019ll be nothing you can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Crazed. Conspiratorial. Fact-free. Talk about misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And then she uncorked her not so hot take on the Holocaust, which marked the very worst moment of her \u201cView\u201d tenure. The extermination of 6 million Jews under Adolf Hitler, Goldberg said, \u201cwas not about race.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The comments quickly rocked the news cycle, and Goldberg sent out a swift mea culpa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOn today\u2019s show, I said the Holocaust \u2018is not about race, but about man\u2019s inhumanity to man.\u2019 I should have said it is about both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yet she attempted more damage control on the far-Left \u201cLate Show\u201d with Stephen Colbert and violated the first rule of holes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She kept digging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMost of the Nazis were white people and most of the people they were attacking were white people \u2026&nbsp; So to me, I\u2019m thinking, \u2018How can you say it\u2019s about race if you are fighting each other?\u2019 This wasn\u2019t \u2013 I said \u2013 this wasn\u2019t racial. This was about white on white.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ABC suspended her for two weeks following the disastrous apology tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A new Daily Mail report doused more kerosene on the cultural fire, unearthing a 1990s faux recipe Goldberg submitted to a cookbook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10474545\/Whoopis-Goldbergs-offensive-1993-Jewish-American-Princess-recipe-chicken.html\">dubbed<\/a> \u201cJewish American Princess Fried Chicken.\u201d The Anti-Defamation League dubbed the submission \u201cinsulting\u201d and \u201canti-Semitic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As of last year, Goldberg had little interest in leaving \u201cThe View.\u201d Now? Reports <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/02\/whoopi-goldberg-threatening-to-quit-the-view-source\/\">say<\/a> the suspension wounded her deeply and she\u2019s mulling an earlier than expected exit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That might be for the best. Goldberg should try re-igniting the comic spark that once burned so brightly.
