According to Macron, he believes that a deal that would prevent full-scale war is on the table, and that it is legitimate for Russia to raise concerns regarding its national security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an interview with the French weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lejdd.fr\/International\/exclusif-crise-en-ukraine-ce-que-macron-va-dire-a-poutine-4092102\">Journal du Dimanche<\/a>, Macron downplayed the notion that Putin is looking to invade Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe intensity of the dialogue we have had with Russia and this visit to Moscow are likely to prevent [a military operation] from happening. Then we will discuss the terms of de-escalation,\u201d he told the Journal, according to a translation provided by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/emmanuel-macron-vows-for-de-escalation-and-dialogue-ahead-of-russian-trip-putin-ukraine\/\"><span>Politico<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI have always been in a deep dialogue with President Putin and our responsibility is to build historic solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Macron then appeared to argue that an expansion of Russian territory was not Putin\u2019s goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe geopolitical objective of Russia today is clearly not Ukraine, but to clarify the rules of cohabitation with NATO and the EU,\u201d Macron said, before implying that Russia\u2019s apparent concerns over their own national security are valid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe security and sovereignty of Ukraine or any other European state cannot be a subject for compromise, while it is also legitimate for Russia to pose the question of its own security,\u201d Macron said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have to be very realistic. We will not obtain unilateral moves, but it is essential to avoid a deterioration of the situation before building mechanisms and reciprocal gestures of trust,\u201d Macron said of a deal that could prevent conflict. \u201cWe must protect our European brothers by proposing a new balance capable of preserving their sovereignty and peace. This must be done while respecting Russia and understanding the contemporary traumas of this great people and great nation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was aware of Macron\u2019s plans to ease tensions,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/frances-macron-flies-moscow-high-risk-diplomatic-mission-2022-02-06\/\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/a><span> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe situation is too complex to expect decisive breakthroughs in the course of one meeting,\u201d Peskov said. \u201cIn recent days there has been nothing new on the topic of security guarantees for Russia, our Western interlocutors prefer not to mention this topic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t think there are short-term victories,\u201d Macron told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-joe-biden-vladimir-putin-europe-moscow-46f8be10fa71af16bae8f3a9bd82918d\"><span>reporters<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe can prevent some things in the short term. I don\u2019t believe in spontaneous miracles. There are lots of tensions, nervousness. That\u2019s also why I decided to start the discussion a few weeks ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conversely, on Sunday, Biden administration National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/593011-sullivan-says-russia-could-invade-the-ukraine-any-day-now\">warned<\/a> that Russia could invade Ukraine \u201c<\/span><span>any day now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are in the window.
