Greg Murphy (R-N.C.), a practicing physician,\u00a0because initial data show that there were many unintended deaths from isolating people at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know a lot more people have died in relation to what our actions were during the pandemic, than maybe perhaps even the pandemic itself,\u201d Murphy told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/rep-murphy-on-the-negative-impacts-of-the-lockdowns_735947.html\">NTD\u2019s \u201cCapitol Report\u201d<\/a> on Feb. 4.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy, a transplant\u00a0surgeon, said lockdowns prevented close to 9 million people from having cancer screenings and thousands of people from having chest pains checked out, \u201cand then subsequently [they] had heart attacks and died at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said that keeping people from going to their houses of worship, schools, and family celebrations resulted in increased isolation and depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so, it\u2019s really taken away not only years of education, but years of socialization. You have seen subsequent results from that \u2026\u00a0 100,000 people died from overdose deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to CDC data from May 2020 to April 2021, the United States\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2021\/20211117.htm\">recorded 100,306 drug overdose deaths<\/a>, up from 78,056 deaths the year before, a 28.5 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p>A study from the National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice last year found that domestic violence incidents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/counciloncj.org\/impact-report-covid-19-and-domestic-violence-trends\/\">increased 8.1 percent in the United States<\/a>\u00a0after lockdowns were implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Data also show that lockdowns negatively impacted children\u2019s learning and health.<\/p>\n<p>Over 90 percent of U.S. teachers said that their students have experienced \u201csome\u201d to \u201csignificant\u201d loss in learning during the pandemic, according to a 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horacemann.com\/~\/media\/White%20Papers\/2021-03-30-Closing-the-Learning-Gap-White-Paper.ashx?token=52771d3f-8982-41a2-8d4b-bf16b217dbd1\">Horace Mann study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Johns Hopkins University study (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.krieger.jhu.edu\/iae\/files\/2022\/01\/A-Literature-Review-and-Meta-Analysis-of-the-Effects-of-Lockdowns-on-COVID-19-Mortality.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) found that lockdowns did not on any significant level help stop deaths from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn analysis \u2026 supports the conclusion that lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality. More specifically, stringency index studies find that lockdowns in Europe and the United States only reduced COVID-19 mortality by 0.2% on average,\u201d\u00a0researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese costs to society must be compared to the benefits of lockdowns, which our meta-analysis has shown are marginal at best,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Doctor\u2019s Caucus, of which Murphy is a member, wrote to National Institutes of Health\u00a0(NIH) Acting Director Lawrence Tabak in January, asking him to further assess the impact of lockdowns and closures of schools on Americans\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where I wrote an NIH letter to ask this to be studied; years of life lost; what have we done to the other populations because of the lockdowns,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>Host Steve Lance asked the congressman about the continued mandates in the nation\u2019s Capitol, where masks and vaccinations are still required to enter Washington, D.C. businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think sadly enough, it\u2019s become entirely political.
