Sarah Palin (R) to the 2011 mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, emails revealed in court showed on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>As Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2017\/06\/14\/very-very-fake-news-new-york-times-revives-blood-libel-against-sarah-palin\/\">reported<\/a> in 2017, the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> published an editorial attacking Palin in the wake of a mass shooting in which a crazed left-wing gunman had fired at Republican members of Congress at a baseball practice in Virginia, wounding several.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19760490\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19760490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/GettyImages-1238167288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the press surround former Alaska Gov. (YUKI IWAMURA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/14\/opinion\/steve-scalise-congress-shot-alexandria-virginia.html?partner=rssnyt&amp;emc=rss&amp;_r=0\">editorial<\/a>, \u201cAmerica\u2019s Lethal Politics,\u201d made the already-debunked false claim: \u201cBefore the shooting, Sarah Palin\u2019s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The map in question showed crosshairs above congressional districts, not people. Breitbart News noted other discrepancies:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n[T]he Tucson killer, Jared Loughner, was <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/16\/us\/16loughner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">mentally disturbed<\/a> and had no political motivations. As even the left-wing HuffPost <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/hodgkinson-liberal-loughner-shooters_us_59414da8e4b003d5948c8908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">reiterated<\/a>&nbsp;Wednesday: \u201cPeople said Jared Lee Loughner was motivated by politics. Reporting proved them wrong.\u201d Second, Sarah Palin\u2019s map was <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.outsidethebeltway.com\/palin-target-graphic-in-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">virtually identical<\/a> to those used by Democrats for years, depicting targets atop contested congressional districts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The map Palin used had also been used during the 2010 congressional elections, months before the Tuscon mass shooting, not simply \u201cbefore.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2017\/06\/15\/new-york-times-corrects-fake-news-editorial-blaming-sarah-palin-shooting\/\">issued<\/a> a correction, changing the offending sentence to say: \u201cBefore the shooting, Sarah Palin\u2019s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs. But in that case no connection to the shooting was ever established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Palin sued for defamation, alleging damage to her reputation.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> attempted to have the lawsuit thrown out, citing the famous 1964 Supreme Court case,&nbsp;<em>New York Times Co. v. Sullivan<\/em>, in which the majority held that a public figure had to show \u201cactual malice\u201d to prevail in a defamation suit.<\/p>\n<p>Practically, that means that a newspaper must not only be wrong, but must know that it is wrong, before it publishes a false report in order to be liable. That high standard is said to show not just sloppiness, but \u201creckless disregard\u201d for the truth.<\/p>\n<p>However, Judge Jed S. (Elizabeth Williams via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The emails revealed in court on Friday were striking, in that they suggested the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> chose to ignore what it knew was untrue.<\/p>\n<p>The UK&nbsp;<i>Daily Mail<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10477345\/Emails-New-York-Times-editors-reveal-ignored-fact-checkers-Sarah-Palin-trial-hears.html\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Damning internal emails sent by members of the New York Times editorial board were made public today during the libel trial brought by Sarah Palin against the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The emails were introduced by Palin\u2019s lawyer Shane Vogt as he questioned Elizabeth Williamson, a journalist with the editorial section of the Times who wrote the first draft of the article.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a message shown to the jury, Jesse Wegman, a member of the NYT editorial board, wrote that he worried the opinion piece that Palin sued over looked like they were trying to \u2018sneak in\u2019 a link between her and the 2011 shooting of former Rep. Gabby Giffords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The emails also show that the editors appear to have ignored the advice of a fact checker who pointed out that the map came out \u2018months\u2019 before the shooting \u2013 but the article only said \u2018before\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Palin is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/23\/business\/media\/sarah-palin-libel-suit-nyt.html\">reported<\/a> to be willing to challenge the&nbsp;<em>Sullivan<\/em> standard, in the event she loses the case, appealing to the Supreme Court if necessary.
