The British musician was dragged in 2021 for endorsing a book authored by Andy Ngo called, \u201cUnmasked: Inside Antifa\u2019s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy,\u201d then refusing to apologize for it. Eventually, the backlash got so bad he quit the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now Marshall is sharing even more opinions that deviate from the mainstream. The 34-year-old banjo player shared an open essay on <a href=\"https:\/\/bariweiss.substack.com\/p\/when-artists-become-the-censors\">Substack<\/a> this week detailing his thoughts on the Joe Rogan\/Spotify controversy plus commenting on all the musicians leaving the platform because of it. He cautioned that this type of groupthink turned performers into \u201cSoviet drones\u201d who were only allowed to think one way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The title of the essay was \u201cWhen Artists Become the Censors.\u201d The piece called out Neil Young, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Joni Mitchell, Nils Lofgren, and India Arie for removing their music from Spotify in protest of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. He also mentioned fellow Brit Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf course, Spotify is a private company; they\u2019re under no obligation to platform anybody. So while this campaign doesn\u2019t breach Rogan\u2019s First Amendment rights, it is a clear stand against the cultural norm of free speech,\u201d he wrote.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd those standing passionately against speech \u2013 a growing list that includes Joni Mitchell, Harry and Megan, the comedian Stewart Lee, the singer India Arie, and Young\u2019s old bandmates, Crosby, Stills and Nash \u2013 are all apparently liberals. Strange, that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Marshall continued, \u201cHow can any artist possibly create without free speech? How are they supposed to be artists if they\u2019re scared that making a mistake or taking a risk that another artist doesn\u2019t like will get them kicked off the very platform that allows them to share their art in the first place?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Next, the artist referenced his departure from Mumford &amp; Sons and explained why he had to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI could have stayed in the band. But it would\u2019ve meant self-censorship. Or lying. So I left,\u201d he shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll communities are prone to a degree of homogeneity,\u201d the musician continued. \u201cThat\u2019s forgivable, but not good. The music industry is no exception. With each new year and each new divisive issue, the creative industries quickly settle into a new orthodoxy. Oddly, that groupthink is often pro-establishment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, Marshall compared the current climate to Soviet censorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnder this sort of pressure, who can be surprised that artists are acting less like artists \u2013 the way they imagine themselves, anyway \u2013 and more like, well, Soviet drones? If artists at the top of their game face this kind of pressure, who can imagine what it\u2019s like for those who dare to think differently and have far fewer resources and far less security?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The banjo player concluded his essay by criticizing the White House for encouraging censorship on Spotify. This likely took aim at White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/psaki-urges-spotify-to-take-more-action-against-joe-rogan\"><span>comment<\/span><\/a><span> on how \u201cthere\u2019s more that can be done\u201d to combat \u201cmisinformation\u201d beyond adding a content warning to Rogan\u2019s podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire\u2019s first original film, Shut In, will be premiering on Thursday, February 10th at 9pm ET on YouTube.
