Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the 2020 presidential election \u2013 over podcast episodes featuring individuals who dissent from mainstream public health officials on handling the Chinese coronavirus pandemic. The controversy became international news after rock musician Neil Young announced he would remove his music from Spotify, which publishes <em>The&nbsp;Joe Rogan Experience<\/em> episodes, as a means of protest against the comedian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure what [Rogan] thinks about me or my government,\u201d Bolsonaro wrote in English on Twitter, \u201cbut it doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf freedom of speech means anything, it means that people should be free to say what they think, no matter if they agree or disagree with us. Bolsonaro (@jairbolsonaro) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jairbolsonaro\/status\/1489036177189572609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While leading a conservative government, Bolsonaro\u2019s tenure in office has been marked by legal persecution of podcasters, Youtubers, and even lawmakers for their public broadcasts by the country\u2019s Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF), the top court. The court is dominated by appointees nominated by former socialist President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva who have used their powers to order federal police raids on public commenters who support Bolsonaro. In one of the more infamous episodes of this, the STF ordered 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/latin-america\/2020\/05\/29\/fake-news-brazilian-court-orders-raids-on-pro-bolsonaro-comedians-journalists\/\">raids<\/a> on bloggers, actors, and lawmakers in May 2020 on charges of \u201cfake news,\u201d which is not a crime in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, the STF <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/internacional\/en\/brazil\/2021\/02\/supreme-court-justice-moraes-orders-arrest-of-congressman-daniel-silveira-after-attacks-on-court-justices.shtml\">ordered<\/a> the arrest of conservative Congressman Daniel Silveira (PSL-RJ) on \u201cfake news\u201d grounds over a YouTube livestream in which he accused the justices on the court of abusing their power.<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro himself has been the victim of censorship, though not by the STF. In July, YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/07\/22\/youtube-censors-videos-posted-by-brazilian-president-jair-bolsonaro-over-coronavirus-misinformation\/\">censored<\/a> a presidential livestream on the grounds that, like Rogan, Bolsonaro had trespassed in his statements into coronavirus \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, appeared to take Rogan\u2019s side in the current controversy, though he did not address his post on Twitter to the comedian and former game show host.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FrEeDoM oF tHe PrEsS iS uNdEr AtTaCk In El SaLvAdOr <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PkPlVOeOc0\">https:\/\/t.co\/PkPlVOeOc0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nayib Bukele \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddfb (@nayibbukele) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nayibbukele\/status\/1488958487317123078?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bukele appears to be referencing complaints from human rights groups that his criticism of journalists had led them to fear for their safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince President Nayib Bukele took office in June of 2019, he has undermined press freedoms, lashing out at independent journalists, accusing them of spreading \u2018fake news,\u2019 and calling them \u2018mercenaries,&#8217;\u201d Human Rights Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/03\/17\/bukeles-legislative-victory-threatens-press-freedom-el-salvador\">lamented<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International has similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2021\/07\/receta-nayib-bukele-para-limitar-ejercicio-derechos-humanos\/\">complained<\/a> that Bukele, who is a very active Twitter user, has criticized non-governmental organizations, which has allegedly resulted in \u201charassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Bolsonaro, who is a right-wing conservative, Bukele has defied political labels.
