The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56023723\">prototype<\/a> was made \u201cby a Danish company from an extra-long paper shell that still contains a thin plastic liner.\u201d It is a first step in a long-term project of completely ridding plastic from the company\u2019s drink containers.<\/p>\n<p>The goal, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56023723\">BBC<\/a>, is to make a bottle that is \u201c100% recyclable\u201d and \u201cplastic-free\u201d that is also able to prevent \u201cgas escaping from carbonated drinks.\u201d Another requirement is to make sure that no parts of the container can fall into the liquid, which would change how the drink tastes, and make the beverages \u201cpotentially fall foul of health and safety checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola has reportedly set a goal of \u201cproducing zero waste by 2030.\u201d This comes after a charity group called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/2020\/12\/02\/top-plastic-polluters-of-2020\/\">Break Free From Plastic<\/a>\u201d ranked the company as the top polluter of plastic in the world last year. The group conducted a survey that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/55218513\">found<\/a> \u201c[Coca-Cola\u2019s] drink bottles were the most commonly found item left on beaches, rivers, parks and other litter sites in 51 of the 55 countries that took part in the survey.\u201d This was an increase in Coca-Cola\u2019s numbers from the previous year, when the beverage giant was only the \u201cmost frequently littered bottle in 37 out of 51 countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company took note, and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/55218513\">BBC<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>A spokesperson for The Coca-Cola Company told Newsround \u201cwe are making progress\u201d in addressing this important issue and it is committed \u201cto get every bottle back by 2030, so that none of it ends up as litter or in the oceans, and the plastic can be recycled into new bottles.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The firm behind the creation of Coca-Cola\u2019s new paper-based vessel is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paboco.com\/\">The Paper Bottle Company<\/a>, or Paboco.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56023723\">BBC<\/a>, some challenges have arisen from creating such a device, one of them being the fact that carbonated drinks, \u201csuch as cola and beer,\u201d are put into containers under pressure, and it is difficult to construct something that will hold up against the intensity of&nbsp;\u201cfizzy drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper also has to be \u201cmoldable\u201d for the many uniquely sized bottles. It also needs to be able to be marked with ink for the labels.<\/p>\n<p>The first trial of the bottle will take place in Hungary this summer after seven years of work in a lab. The Coca-Cola fruit drink, Adez, will be the first to be distributed with the bottle through a local retail chain.<\/p>\n<p>Other companies have also enlisted the paper bottle-making firm, including Absolut, the vodka-maker, which \u201cis due to test 2,000 paper bottles of it own in the UK and Sweden of its pre-mixed, carbonated raspberry drink. And beer company Carlsberg is also building prototypes of a paper beer bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bottles have not been tested in the world yet, so the trials of Absolut and Coca-Cola will demonstrate adjustments that might need to be made.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>\u201cWe have a good understanding already of what the bottle will go through as we put it into the real world,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56023723\">says Michael Michelsen,<\/a> the firm\u2019s commercial manager. \u201cBut there is a certain point where you just can\u2019t design yourself out of this at a desk, right? You need to get into that real world and you need to get that real world feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another concern behind the long-term goal of creating paper bottles is the cost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56023723\">According to BBC<\/a>, Packaging Europe magazine Digital Editor Fin Slater says, \u201cPaper bottles are really exciting for packaging innovation geeks like us,\u201d however, they will be \u201ca niche product for a while yet\u201d even if the pilot programs to test them move ahead smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>BBC also paraphrases Slater, noting that \u201c[plastic] bottles are embedded in the industry, and in many countries, are widely recycled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prototype of the paper container does not entirely accomplish the main goal of creating a plastic-free bottle, and the next step will be to add a \u201cplant-based coating on the inside of the bottle\u201d so the paper doesn\u2019t come into contact with liquid. Paper caps will also need to be added, so eventually, the production lines that make the plastic bottles will need to be \u201cadapted for an all-paper cap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola perhaps sees this step as just the beginning of a new way to transport their products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA paper bottle opens up a whole new world of packaging possibilities,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/news\/coca-cola-unveils-paper-bottle-prototype\">Stijn Franssen, R&amp;D packaging innovation manager, Coca-Cola EMEA<\/a>, \u201cand we are convinced that paper packaging has a role to play in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
