(DASRIL ROSZANDI\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The W.H.O.\u2019s report detailed how 30 percent of&nbsp;healthcare facilities globally \u2014 60 percent&nbsp;in the least developed nations \u2014&nbsp;are \u201cnot equipped\u201d to handle medical waste loads. This statistic accounts only for medical waste documented before the onset of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, which began on March 11, 2020, and remains ongoing today.<\/p>\n<p>Health clinics and hospitals that fail to handle or dispose of medical waste properly risk exposing their employees and patients to&nbsp;\u201cneedle stick injuries, burns and pathogenic microorganisms,\u201d according to the W.H.O.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>These ill-equipped sites also negatively impact the members of nearby communities by promoting the existence of \u201cpoorly managed landfills and waste disposal sites \u2026 [which in turn produce] contaminated air from burning waste, poor water quality or disease carrying pests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The W.H.O.\u2019s February 1 report recommended some practical solutions to solving the medical waste issue, such as \u201cthe rational use of PPE,\u201d or Personal Protective Equipment.
