Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is advancing legislation to protect girls and women from being forced to compete in sports against biological men who \u201cidentify\u201d as transgender women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and to all of the women and girls who are striving to achieve their goals, despite all of the setbacks and the challenges, I want you to know that we are here on the sidelines cheering you on,\u201d Blackburn said in a video distributed to the media. \u201cThere is legislation, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, that I am co-sponsoring. We are determined to make certain that you have the ability, the right, the opportunity to achieve your goals. Get out there, compete, and win.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Activists in the LGBT rights movement have successfully pressed institutions, including the NCAA and the International Olympic Committee, to allow men to compete against women in sporting competitions. The policy has resulted in female athletes losing contests and even scholarship opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/02230849\/sen-marsha-blackburn-questions-head-of-instagram-adam-mosseri-during-picture-id1237102109\" alt=\"Sen. Marsha Blackburn questions Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri during a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing titled...\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>(Photo by Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The uneven playing field has motivated both conservatives and feminists to act to protect the standing women have gotten in sports and other areas under the federal Title IV statute that prohibits discrimination based on biological sex.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Women\u2019s Liberation Front (WoLF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensliberationfront.org\/news\/wolf-endorses-protection-of-women-and-girls-sports-act#:~:text=Protection%20of%20Women%20and%20Girls%20in%20Sports%20Act,as%20a%20key%20global%20driver%20of%20women\u2019s%20empowerment\">endorsed<\/a> the bill when it was introduced in 2020 and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When men and boys are allowed to compete in athletic leagues designed for women and girls, they deprive female athletes of the opportunity to fair and safe participation in sports, and negate all benefits derived from athletic participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re glad to see that some in politics are still committed to preserving women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports, rather than chasing the latest political fashion trend. We endorse the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, and we call on the Senate to represent the interests of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensliberationfront.org\/news\/national-poll-support-for-womens-spaces\">overwhelming majority<\/a> of American voters who support fair play for women and girls,\u201d said Natasha Chart, Executive Director of the Women\u2019s Liberation Front.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen transgender [male] athletes compete against women, women\u2019s sports are no longer women\u2019s sports \u2013 they become unisex athletic events,\u201d Sen Mike Lee (R-UT said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?ID=B2E9AC3A-20E5-4966-B3B1-0439FDA0FB0A\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThis bill would protect the opportunity of girls throughout America to athletically compete against other girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate version of the bill, which has a companion bill in the House, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/4649\/all-info\">states:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This bill makes it a violation of federal law for a recipient of federal funds who operates, sponsors, or facilitates athletic programs or activities to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.<\/p>\n<p>The bill specifies that sex shall be recognized based solely on a person\u2019s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lawmakers crafted the legislation after President Joe Biden signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensliberationfront.org\/news\/president-biden-executive-orders-day-1\">executive order<\/a> on his first day in office ordering federal agencies, including the Department of Education, to interpret \u201cfederal anti-discrimination statutes that cover sex discrimination prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other sponsors of the bill include Sens.
