Elizabeth Warren, Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic California Rep. Ro Khanna all spent more than $500 on Uber and Lyft rides in 2021, despite their stated beliefs that the companies mistreat their employees and that they take advantage of loopholes in federal labor laws. All three members are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/420\/cosponsors\">co-sponsors<\/a> of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/842\/cosponsors\">Act<\/a>, which would eliminate secret ballots for union elections and eliminate right to work laws. The bill is supported by major labor unions and opposed by business and freelance worker organizations. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/09\/house-pro-union-protecting-the-right-to-organize-act-business-groups\/\"><strong>(RELATED: House Passes Partisan Pro-Union Bill Decried By Business Groups. Here\u2019s What\u2019s In It)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both Sanders and Warren made opposition to companies that employ independent contractors, such as ride-sharing platforms like Uber and Lyft, key planks in their 2020 presidential platforms. Sanders <a href=\"https:\/\/berniesanders.com\/issues\/workplace-democracy\/\">claimed<\/a> that the independent contractor designation allows companies to \u201cruthlessly exploit workers,\u201d and promised to prevent them from doing so if he was elected president. Warren <a href=\"https:\/\/elizabethwarren.com\/plans\/empowering-american-workers\/?\">called<\/a> out Uber and Lyft specifically on her website, while arguing that \u201cmillions of workers\u201d have their rights \u201cdenied\u201d by such a classification.<\/p>\n<p>Warren spoke at a union rally in September in opposition to a Massachusetts ballot measure that would allow companies to designate app-based drivers as independent contractors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s great for big tech, great for big corporations, and a disaster for American workers who are trying to pay the rent and keep food on the table,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/09\/08\/elizabeth-warren-uber-ballot-question-massachusetts\/\">said<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her opposition to ride-sharing companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=efiling&amp;committee_id=C00500843&amp;disbursement_description=travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warren<\/a> spent $556.25 on Uber rides in 2021, filings updated with the FEC on Monday reveal. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=efiling&amp;committee_id=C00411330&amp;disbursement_description=Transportation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sanders<\/a> spent $847.85 on Uber and Lyft rides in 2021, according to his filings. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/cori-bush-defund-police-spent-taxpayer-money-private-security-statement-disbursements-house\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Rep. Cori Bush Wants To \u2018Defund The Police\u2019 But Spent Taxpayer Money On Private Security For Herself)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Neither Warren nor Sanders responded to the Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to co-sponsoring the PRO Act, Khanna campaigned extensively against California\u2019s Proposition 22, which gives ride-share services like Uber and Lyft an exemption from the state\u2019s anti-freelancing law, Assembly Bill 5. That law, passed in 2019, limits the number of assignments freelance employees can accept in one year. BROWN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Khanna, however, defended AB5, and opposed Proposition 22, which passed with the support of over <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/California_Proposition_22,_App-Based_Drivers_as_Contractors_and_Labor_Policies_Initiative_(2020)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">58%<\/a> of Californians. Anti-freelance legislation allows contractors to receive \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">the same benefits and workplace protections as everyone else<\/span>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1294306034203336704\">Khanna<\/a> has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1362894483860451328\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnionization has allowed workers to claim their part of the economy,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=idPcX0zhduo&amp;t=317s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> CNBC in 2019. \u201cYou have a company come in that\u2019s worth $50 billion, where the founder has cashed out for $1 billion, and said that they can\u2019t afford to pay workers $15 and provide them with overtime benefits and healthcare benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his public criticism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=efiling&amp;committee_id=C00503185&amp;disbursement_description=travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khanna<\/a> $953.61 on Lyft rides in 2021, according to his FEC filings.
