We need to act now if we are to meet our 2030 and 2050 targets. Today\u2019s Delegated Act is about accompanying the EU economy in the energy transition, a just transition, as a bridge towards a green energy system based on renewable energy sources,\u201d said Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for People. \u201cIt will accelerate the private investment we need, especially in this decade. With today\u2019s new rules, we are also strengthening transparency and disclosures of information, so that investors make informed decisions, thereby avoiding any greenwashing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe EU is committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and we need to use all the tools at our disposal to get there. Stepping up private investment in the transition is key to reaching our climate goals,\u201d Mairead McGuinness, Commissioner in charge of Financial Services, Financial Stability, and Capital Markets Union said. \u201cToday we are setting out strict conditions to help mobilize finance to support this transition, away from more harmful energy sources like coal. And we are boosting market transparency so that investors will be able to easily identify gas and nuclear activities in any investment decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe proposal would deem natural gas and nuclear power as \u2018transitional\u2019 green energy sources to be used to bridge countries\u2019 moves away from coal and carbon-emitting power toward clean energy technologies like wind and solar,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/02\/business\/europe-green-investments-nuclear-natural-gas.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> explained. \u201cNuclear power would be considered a sustainable investment if countries can safely dispose of radioactive waste \u2014 one of the biggest concerns for the German-led bloc. New plants would be considered sustainable investments through 2045 and would have to undergo safety upgrades during their lifetime to ensure \u2018the highest achievable safety standards,\u2019 according to the draft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNatural gas plants would be deemed \u2018transitional\u2019 green energy sources for investment purposes if they meet certain emissions criteria and replace more polluting fossil fuel plants,\u201d The New York Times added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFour countries wrote to the Commission on Monday urging it to exclude gas, citing a \u2018lack of scientific evidence\u2019 for labeling the fuel as green,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/eu-propose-green-investment-label-gas-nuclear-energy-source-says-2022-02-01\/\"><span>Reuters<\/span><\/a><span> reported. \u201cAustria and Luxembourg have threatened legal action if the EU brands nuclear as sustainable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNuclear power is neither \u2018green\u2019 nor sustainable,\u201d Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karlnehammer\/status\/1488847939833405443\"><span>tweeted<\/span><\/a><span> on Wednesday. \u201cI cannot understand the decision of the EU. Environment Minister [Leonore Gewessler] has my full support in considering legal action.
