Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n (D-NM) was&nbsp;hospitalized Tuesday with no timetable for return after undergoing brain surgery to relieve swelling following a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Luj\u00e1n, 49,&nbsp;is at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where he had \u201cdecompressive surgery to ease swelling,\u201d according to a statement from his chief of staff, Carlos Sanchez, who also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democratic-sen-ben-ray-lujan-hospitalized-for-stroke-11643750422\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the senator\u2019s stroke was impacting his balance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe is currently being cared for at UNM Hospital, resting comfortably, and expected to make a full recovery,\u201d Sanchez said.<\/p>\n<p>Luj\u00e1n won his Senate seat in 2020 after having served in the House since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>It is unknown when Luj\u00e1n will be able to return to the Senate to cast crucial votes in the split 50\/50 senate. But until he returns, Senate Democrats no longer have Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019s tie-breaking vote to pass radical, partisan legislation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Luj\u00e1n\u2019s absence will impact what Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) can accomplish without a working majority. Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/email.punchbowl.news\/t\/ViewEmail\/t\/0B5525B7A40260B42540EF23F30FEDED\/285B195D379BF34946778398EADC2510?alternativeLink=False\">can<\/a> only hold votes on which he has clear bipartisan support, meaning Sen. Mitch McConnell\u2019s (R-KY) \u201cvirtual veto on legislation now extends to the executive calendar as well,\u201d Punchbowl News reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all praying for Ben Ray and his family,\u201d Schumer stated. \u201cWe look forward to his quick return to the Senate, and I believe the Senate will be able to carry forward with its business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Schumer unable to assemble a majority, the likelihood of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/01\/rep-michael-mccaul-slams-biden-omitting-the-word-china-from-statement-anti-china-bill\/\">passing<\/a> the Democrats\u2019 USICA\/America COMPETES bill is far lower.&nbsp;That legislation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/26\/democrat-anti-china-bill-riddled-with-woke-climate-change-carveouts19632674\/\">designed<\/a> to increase funding for semiconductor research, but much of the funding would go to institutions vulnerable to Chinese espionage.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer will likely need a working majority in late March or early April to confirm President Biden\u2019s pending Supreme Court nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Biden will put forth his nomination before the end of February, after which time the nominee will be grilled in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee before proceeding to a full Senate vote.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Wendell Huseb\u00f8 on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WendellHusebo?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gettr.com\/user\/wendellhusebo\">Gettr<\/a>&nbsp;@WendellHuseb\u00f8<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
