Rather than hack the actual companies, they allegedly targeted two firms \u2014 with which thousands of public companies use to make electronic filings \u2014 for&nbsp;market-moving information,&nbsp;prosecutors say.<\/p>\n<p>Recently unsealed indictments in Boston\u2019s federal court claim a group led by Russian cybersecurity executive Vladislav Klyushin \u2014 who has ties to the Kremlin \u2014 stole inside information and made over $82 million by trading ahead of unreleased announcements, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/gm-stock-price-earnings-guidance-51643724225\">report<\/a> by <em>Barron\u2019s magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_13934372\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Kremlin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13934372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Kremlin.jpg\" alt=\"A police officer patrols at the Zaryadye park with the Kremlin&#039;s Spasskaya tower and St. Basil&#039;s Cathedral on the background in central Moscow on June 29, 2020. (Photo by Yuri KADOBNOV \/ AFP) (Photo by YURI KADOBNOV\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Described as \u201cone of the largest hackings of inside information on stocks ever charged,\u201d the&nbsp;Klyushin group got their hands on inside information regarding&nbsp;Tesla, Microsoft, IBM, as well a more than 165 other companies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9431098\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Elon-Musk-confused.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9431098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Elon-Musk-confused.jpg\" alt=\"Elon Musk of Tesla confused\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elon Musk of Tesla (Getty\/Peter Parks)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>While documents from the Department of Justice, and a civil case by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), conceal the names of the two firms, the SEC describes \u201cServicer A\u201d as a Chicago-based company, and \u201cServicer B\u201d as a division of a foreign company.<\/p>\n<p><em>Barron\u2019s<\/em>, however, says it was able to identify \u201cServicer A\u201d as Donnelley Financial Solutions, and \u201cServicer B\u201d as the Toppan Merrill unit of Japan\u2019s Toppan.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, the Klyushin hackers stole computer passwords from the filing agents\u2019 employees, and then wandered through the firms\u2019 networks from 2017 through 2020 to steal copies of more than 500 unannounced earnings drafts.<\/p>\n<p>Klyushin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/u-s-charges-russian-national-in-multimillion-dollar-hacking-and-trading-scheme\/\">arrested<\/a> in&nbsp;Switzerland late last year and&nbsp;extradited to the U.S., where he pleaded not guilty at his January 8&nbsp;arraignment. U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler declined to release him on bail. Meanwhile, Klyushin\u2019s co-defendants remain at large.<\/p>\n<p>While&nbsp;Donnelley Financial did not respond to the magazine\u2019s request for comment,&nbsp;Toppan Merrill acknowledged that it is one of the filing firms described in the indictments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cToppan Merrill has been cooperating fully with government authorities in support of their investigations in this matter,\u201d the company\u2019s general counsel Lisa Bilcik told <em>Barron\u2019s<\/em>. \u201cWe have communicated with the limited set of customers whose information was allegedly accessed and used in the illegal trading scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the four co-defendants who remains at large is 35-year-old Ivan Yermakov, who worked for Klyushin\u2019s Moscow-based cybersecurity firm, M-13, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Yermakov is also a veteran of a Russian military intelligence agency known as GRU. While at GRU, Yermakov hacked the Democrat Party\u2019s computers, as well as Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign, ahead of the 2016 elections, according to a&nbsp;2018 federal indictment.<\/p>\n<p>A second 2018 indictment charged&nbsp;Yermakov with&nbsp;hacking several other entities, including anti-doping agencies and officials, sports federations, the nuclear reactor unit of Westinghouse Electric, the international agency against chemical weapons, and a lab that had investigated suspected Russian poisonings in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The M-13 cybersecurity firm\u2019s website lists clients that include Russian government agencies and the office of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
