I don\u2019t know what you guys are talking about.\u201d Raju said he asked Manchin if he had had any talks on the matter since December and Manchin answered, \u201cNo, no, no, no. It\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen. Joe Manchin, asked about Build Back Better, said: \u201cWhat Build Back Better bill? I don\u2019t know what you guys are talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked him if he\u2019s had any talks on the matter since December. \u201cNo, no, no, no. It\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Manu Raju (@mkraju) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mkraju\/status\/1488558571562360835?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In mid-December, Manchin said he would oppose Build Back Better, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/manchin-says-he-cannot-vote-for-build-back-better-ive-done-everything-humanly-possible\">Fox News<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve done everything humanly possible. \u2026 \u201cWhen you have these things coming at you the way they are right now \u2026 I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. \u2026 This is a no. I have tried everything I know to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cInflation is real, it\u2019s not going away any time soon. \u2026 What we need to do is get our financial house in order, but be able to pay for what we do and do what we pay for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/manchin-long-raised-concerns-about-build-back-better-can-democrats-address-them-now-11640185190?mod=article_inline\">reported<\/a> a few days later, \u201cAs a critical vote for Democrats in the 50-50 Senate, Mr. Manchin has repeatedly questioned how the spending&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/both-manchin-and-biden-are-wrong-about-build-back-betters-inflation-impact-11640179802?mod=article_inline\">could affect rising inflation<\/a>&nbsp;and debt levels\u2014concerns that he said other Democrats didn\u2019t take seriously enough in the talks.\u201d Manchin stated, \u201cI\u2019ve spoken so many times on television in telling people where I am. I have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/manchin-says-he-won-t-vote-for-build-back-better-bill-11639924048?mod=article_inline\">attacked<\/a> Manchin after his December statements, saying, \u201cIf his comments on Fox and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the president and the senator\u2019s colleagues in the House and Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In mid-January Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-start-to-sketch-out-revived-build-back-better-package-11642771824?mod=article_relatedinline\">asserted<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m hoping to talk to everybody and start with a clean sheet of paper. We\u2019ll just be starting from scratch whenever we start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last Thursday, Manchin said, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of conversations going on, they\u2019ve been reaching out. We haven\u2019t sat down physically and started any negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-put-build-back-better-in-joe-manchins-court-11643554801\">Sunday<\/a>, \u201cMany Democrats are eager to start piecing together legislation after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/manchin-long-raised-concerns-about-build-back-better-can-democrats-address-them-now-11640185190?mod=article_inline\">Mr. Manchin\u2019s rejection of the House-passed Build Back Better bill<\/a>&nbsp;put talks on ice for weeks. In a West Virginia broadcast interview, Mr. Manchin said talks had restarted on the bill, adding that he was primarily focused on a separate effort on bipartisan elections legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Journal added, \u201cSome Democrats are moving to preserve endangered elements of the House bill, including lifting the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-new-tax-law-state-and-local-tax-deductions-1518542356?mod=article_inline\">$10,000 cap on the state and local tax deductions<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-explore-changes-for-child-tax-credit-to-win-manchins-favor-11642169936?mod=article_inline\">the expanded child tax credit<\/a>.
