Suddenly, any stray expression of irritation at mask mandates or casual mention of doubt in the all-knowing pronouncements of our health overlords will have the social media censors turning their attention toward you like the Eye of Sauron. You\u2019d think, given the frequency with which they end up with egg on their faces for their insistence that they\u2019re following \u201cscience,\u201d they would have learned a little humility by now. Sadly, there\u2019s not much evidence of that as the \u201cmisinformation\u201d labels and account suspensions continue apace.<\/p>\n<p>The following four examples of social media giants censoring what turned out to be accurate information prove why they shouldn\u2019t be in charge of fact-checking the public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lab-Leak Theory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Early in the pandemic, NIAID Director Anthony Fauci and NIH Director Francis Collins began hearing from dozens of scientists offering evidence that Covid did not, as initial reports claimed, originate naturally from a Chinese wet market. But while Drs. Fauci and Collins were <a href=\"https:\/\/republicans-oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Letter-Re.-Feb-1-Emails-011122.pdf\">warned<\/a> of the potential that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Collins appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9644435\/NIH-head-Dr-Francis-Collins-dismissed-Wuhan-lab-leak-theory-conspiracy.html\">dismiss<\/a> what came to be known as the \u201clab leak theory\u201d as a \u201cconspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March 2020, Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/directorsblog.nih.gov\/2020\/03\/26\/genomic-research-points-to-natural-origin-of-covid-19\/\">huffed<\/a> that, \u201cSome folks are even making outrageous claims that the new coronavirus causing the pandemic was engineered in a lab and deliberately released to make people sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/anthony-fauci-no-scientific-evidence-the-coronavirus-was-made-in-a-chinese-lab-cvd\">National Geographic<\/a> that the novel coronavirus \u201ccould not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Big Tech was happy to take their word for it.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, Facebook announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/misinformation-coronavirus-pandemic-ab976e93147c15945e98a4dba914e121\">update<\/a> to its sweeping misinformation policy intended to \u201c[remove] more false claims about Covid-19 and vaccines.\u201d Among the assertions that would henceforth be banned \u2014 claims that Covid leaked from a Wuhan lab.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/google-does-not-auto-complete-searches-wuhan-lab-leak-theory-2021-6\">would not allow<\/a> its search engine to auto-populate \u201clab leak\u201d alongside \u201ccoronavirus.\u201d Why not? Because, according to a Google spokesman, the company didn\u2019t want to \u201c[lead] people down pathways that we would find to be not authoritative information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it was clear, a few months later, that support for the lab leak theory was growing in the scientific community (or, at least, more scientists were willing to speak up and admit it had been an eminently reasonable supposition all along), Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/may\/27\/facebook-lifts-ban-on-posts-claiming-covid-19-was-man-made\">reversed<\/a> its ban.<\/p>\n<p>But as for Google, even after President Biden ordered US spy agencies to conduct a 90-day investigation into the issue, the company still didn\u2019t officially reverse its autocomplete policy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Covid Vaccine and Menstrual Cycles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the earliest banned Covid subjects on social media was suggesting vaccines might adversely affect fertility. The concern over whether a new medical treatment can impact a woman\u2019s ability to bear children is a serious one, especially when there hasn\u2019t been time to conduct long-term research. These worries ramped up as women began anecdotally sharing that the Covid vaccine was affecting their periods.<\/p>\n<p>Among the countless media outlets that rushed to tell these ladies they were nuts for believing their own bodies was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1480635142217641986\">Good Morning America<\/a>.\u201d It brought on Dr. Jennifer Ashton to declare that there was \u201czero scientific or medical basis\u201d for believing that the vaccine could impact periods because there is \u201czero hormonal interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on \u201cfacts\u201d like these, Facebook and Twitter felt no compunction about slapping misinformation labels on posts from women questioning the vaccine\u2019s impact on their ability to get pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, their stories weren\u2019t so crazy after all. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/01\/06\/1070796638\/covid-vaccine-periods\">study<\/a> released two weeks ago found that Covid vaccinations <em>can<\/em> disrupt women\u2019s menstrual cycles. Often not by much, but a delay is a delay.<\/p>\n<p>As another recent study, funded by the NIH itself concluded, we still don\u2019t have conclusive long-term proof that Covid vaccines have no impact on fertility. The best the researchers could offer was, \u201cIt is unlikely that adverse effects on fertility could arise many months after vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The menstrual cycle, as any kid in a high school science class knows, determines when ovulation happens, and it does appear it can be impacted by the Covid vaccine. While we don\u2019t yet know how large the impact may be, Big Tech\u2019s insistence it could not have an impact was clearly wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone knows that over the last two years one of the easiest ways to see your social media post disappear or receive a label was to question the efficacy of masks. No one was immune. Dr. Scott Atlas, one of President Trump\u2019s controversial pandemic advisors, said his Twitter account was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8858729\/Scott-Altas-accuses-Twitter-censoring-facts-coronavirus-mask-message-deleted.html\">locked<\/a> for 12 hours after he posted a message on the platform that said \u201cMasks work? NO\u201d followed by citations questioning the efficacy of face coverings in certain areas with strict requirements.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube followed suit in August by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/08\/11\/tech\/rand-paul-youtube-suspension\/index.html\">suspending<\/a> Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), another doctor, who said the platform banned him for seven days for a video that quotes peer-reviewed articles saying cloth masks don\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>One<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If anything has highlighted just how much Big Tech now controls our public discourse, it is the pandemic.
