Greg Abbott (R) holds a five-point lead over Democrat Beto O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/uh.edu\/hobby\/election.pdf\">hypothetical poll<\/a>, with four candidates expected to be on the general election ballot in November, Abbott holds a five-point lead over O\u2019Rourke, who has two&nbsp;failed campaign attempts \u2014 losing against Sen. (AP Photo\/Julio Cortez)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mark Jay Tippetts, running as the&nbsp;Libertarian&nbsp;candidate, received two percent of the vote, and&nbsp;Delilah Barrios, running as the&nbsp;Green&nbsp;candidate, received one percent of the vote in the hypothetical matchup. Forty-five percent of the&nbsp;independent voters said they would vote for Abbott, while only 17 percent said O\u2019Rourke, seven percent said&nbsp;Tippetts, and three percent said Barrios. There was also 28 percent of the independent voters who said they \u201cdon\u2019t know\u201d or \u201cunsure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week&nbsp;during a&nbsp;news conference O\u2019Rourke, who is currently trailing in the polls,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/24\/beto-orourke-joe-biden-stay-away-me\/\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;that he wants President Joe Biden and any other politician from Washington, DC, to stay away from his campaign&nbsp;for governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not interested in any national politician \u2014 anyone outside of Texas \u2014 coming into this state to help decide the outcome of this,\u201d O\u2019Rourke said, noting that he wants to only \u201cwork with\u201d and \u201clisten to\u201d people from the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who has now been in office for over a year, has been plagued with bad poll numbers after dealing&nbsp;with the consequences of poor decision-making during his presidency, such as&nbsp;a supply chain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2021\/10\/19\/record-breaking-100-ships-anchored-waiting-at-los-angeles-and-long-beach-ports\/\">crisis<\/a>, record-high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/white-house-braces-for-latest-us-inflation-surge\/\">inflation<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/28\/pentagon-releases-names-of-the-13-service-members-killed-in-kabul-attack\/\">botched<\/a> Afghanistan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/22\/state-department-americans-afghanistan\/\">withdrawal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston <a href=\"https:\/\/uh.edu\/hobby\/election.pdf\">conducted<\/a> its survey between January 14 to 24. There were 1,400 respondents from&nbsp;YouGov, a market research company,&nbsp;who were registered to vote in Texas, surveyed to find the&nbsp;preferences and opinions around the 2022 primary candidates and policy issues.
