The case was premised on a role in democracy that the main stream press seems increasingly disinterested in playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19685658\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-30-at-12.36.55-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19685658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-30-at-12.36.55-PM.png\" alt=\"Marc Elias tweet (Twitter)\" width=\"1228\" height=\"866\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marc Elias tweet (Twitter)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Elias was referring to a case that requires public figures to prove \u201cactual malice\u201d in defamation lawsuits, which means they cannot prevail if an article is merely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Some conservatives have indeed challenged the standard, but Elias appeared to be angered by the fact that the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> reported on his funding at all, rather than challenging the information in the article.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/29\/us\/politics\/democrats-dark-money-donors.html#darkmoney-methodology\">reported<\/a> that Democrats had outspent Republicans by 66% in terms of \u201cdark money\u201d in the 2020 election cycle, despite complaining for a decade about such funding. The article also identified Elias\u2019s alleged funding:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In weighing which nonprofits to include in its analysis, The Times considered both their spending on politically oriented efforts, as well as their relationships with allied groups. Some major institutions, such as the National Rifle Association and the Sierra Club, are involved in politics but were excluded because they spent heavily on membership-oriented activities.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis includes three of the five Arabella-administered nonprofits, among them one charity, the Hopewell Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Hopewell also sponsored a project called Democracy Docket Legal Fund that filed lawsuits to block Republican-backed voting restrictions enacted across the country. It was led by a top Democratic Party election lawyer, Marc E. Elias. His firm at the time, Perkins Coie, was paid $9.6 million by Hopewell, according to tax returns, and another $11.6 million by the Biden-backing Priorities USA nonprofit group.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Criticism poured in on Sunday for Elias\u2019s apparent stance against the free press in the supposed name of \u201cdemocracy\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Striking. Elias (@marceelias) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marceelias\/status\/1487855285196763139?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marceelias\/status\/1487522752726720517?s=20&amp;t=nB2hIHt4BPedAtaU56AG7w\">retained<\/a> his tweets attacking the&nbsp;<em>Times&nbsp;<\/em>for supposedly covering \u201cboth sides\u201d of the story about lawsuits over voting rules and election outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Elias, who styles himself as a defender of democracy, but he was reportedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/clinton-campaign-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier\/2017\/10\/24\/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html\">involved<\/a> in funding Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that created the fraudulent Russia \u201cdossier\u201d on Trump that fueled efforts to overturn the 2016 election. He is known for attempting to overturn close elections in Democrats\u2019 favor \u2014 even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2020-election\/2021\/02\/03\/democrat-lawyer-marc-elias-claims-faulty-voting-machines-in-new-york-race\/\">claiming<\/a>, in 2020, that there were faulty voting machines in a congressional race, a claim that Democrats ridiculed when made by President Donald Trump about his race.<\/p>\n<p>He also sued a large number of states during the 2020 election in an attempt to change voting rules \u2014 often successfully \u2014 and defended Democrats\u2019 victories in many states where Trump and the Republicans sought to challenge the results.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
