Mark Milley warned on Friday that a Russian invasion into Ukraine would yield \u201chorrific\u201d results as the administration believes that Russia has amassed approximately 100,000 soldiers near the Ukrainian border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile final decisions haven\u2019t been made, the officials said, the potential targets include several of Russia\u2019s largest government-owned banks, such as VTB Bank, the banning of all trade in new issues of Russian sovereign debt and the application of export controls across key sectors such as advanced microelectronics,\u201d The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-sanctions-plan-targets-russian-banks-companies-and-imports-if-ukraine-is-attacked-11643387219?st=prd46rorjt82rry&amp;reflink=article_copyURL_share\">reported<\/a>. \u201cOff the table, for now, are sanctions on oil and natural-gas exports or disconnecting Russia from SWIFT, the basic infrastructure that facilitates financial transactions between banks across the world, the U.S. officials said, but that could change depending on Russian actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said that Russia is better prepared to deal with U.S. sanctions now than it was in 2014 as it now has \u201cdeeper foreign-currency reserves, less reliance on foreign debt, faster economic growth and rising prices for oil\u2014the country\u2019s primary revenue source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report was met with backlash online by those who said that the administration was going soft on Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow. The Biden administration bowing to Moscow, and the demands of the appeasers in Berlin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Milley and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-biden-to-deploy-u-s-soldiers-to-eastern-europe-as-tensions-with-russia-escalate\">warned<\/a> this week that a conflict between Russia and Ukraine would yield \u201csignificant\u201d casualties and that conflict was not \u201cinevitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the type of forces that are arrayed \u2026 if that was unleashed on Ukraine, it would be significant, very significant, and it would result in a significant amount of casualties,\u201d Milley&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/28\/politics\/us-russia-ukraine-invasion-warning\/index.html\">said<\/a>&nbsp;at a Pentagon press briefing. \u201cYou can imagine what that might look like in dense urban areas, along roads, and so on and so forth. It would be horrific. It would be terrible. And it\u2019s not necessary. And we think a diplomatic outcome is the way to go here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason that this situation has to devolve into conflict,\u201d Austin said. \u201cHe can choose to de-escalate. He can order his troops away.
