Kathy Skroch (R-Lidgerwood), who co-sponsored the bill. \u201cIt upholds 50 years of progress and protecting women against discrimination and advocates for the preservation of biological standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s main sponsor, state Rep. Ben Koppelman (R), appealed to history and biology to support his position, arguing, \u201cSome have said this bill just doesn\u2019t follow the science. We\u2019ve got science going back well before the United States that backs this. This isn\u2019t new science. Men and women didn\u2019t just cease to exist. They\u2019ve existed for a long time and we\u2019ve been able to recognize the differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State House Minority Leader Josh Boschee (D) was less enthusiastic about the proposed law.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s about learning about yourself, being part of a team, solving problems, figuring out life. But we\u2019re gonna tell some kids you can\u2019t,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd even though most [of] those kids aren\u2019t gonna go up for high school athletics because it\u2019s not within their skillset or desirability, they\u2019re gonna see the action made by this body and it\u2019s going to play into some unfortunate other decisions that they\u2019ll make,\u201d Boschee added.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Mary Schneider (D-Fargo), another opponent of the bill, said, \u201cThis bill is thinly veiled prejudice under the guise of protection. This bill is fomenting fear where no problem is present. Kill this bad bill. Let\u2019s get out of the way and let our kids play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argued that the bill is discriminatory, which follows their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/aclu-issues-twitter-thread-allegedly-debunking-myths-about-trans-students-in-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent threat<\/a> to go after states that ban transgender athletes on sports teams.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota is one of about a dozen other states dealing with legislation regarding transgender students participating on sports teams with members of the opposite biological sex. As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/utah-house-moves-forward-with-bill-to-ban-transgender-athletes-in-school-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;regarding Utah:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>A committee of the Utah state House of Representatives advanced a bill on Thursday to ban biological boys from competing on female sports teams in the state\u2019s public and private K-12 schools.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/le.utah.gov\/~2021\/bills\/static\/HB0302.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HB302<\/a>, titled the Preserving Sports for Female Students bill,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/le.utah.gov\/~2021\/bills\/static\/HB0302.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed<\/a>&nbsp;on an 8-6 vote and was introduced by state&nbsp;Rep. Kera Birkeland, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/02\/11\/utah-house-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Salt Lake Tribune<\/a>. If passed, it would require all schools to delineate whether sports are \u201cmale,\u201d \u201cfemale,\u201d or \u201ccoed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The bill, which defines sex as the \u201cbiological, physical condition of being male or female, determined by an individual\u2019s genetics and anatomy at birth,\u201d would forbid biological males from competing in female sports, regardless of their gender identity.
