In a 68-page <a href=\"https:\/\/s.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/documents\/78_memorandum_opinion-1.27.22.pdf\">ruling<\/a>, the judge returned the sale to the Interior Department for further consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Contreras ruled that the Trump administration did not adequately account for the environmental risks when authorizing the sale and said the Interior Department \u201carbitrarily\u201d failed to account for foreign energy consumption when predicting the new lease\u2019s effect on greenhouse gas emissions. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/15\/joe-biden-oil-gas-leases-new-mexico-native-american-tribes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden Blocks Oil, Gas Leases In Large New Mexico Region At Request Of Native American Tribes)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7351196\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7351196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Joe Biden looks at a wind turbine blade as he toured the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Arvada, Colorado. (Brendan Smialowski\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Interior Department spokesperson Melissa Schwartz said that the agency would review the ruling, but declined to comment on whether the department would conduct a new study on emissions with the goal of holding another sale in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have documented serious deficiencies in the federal oil and gas program,\u201d Schwartz <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSchwartz3\/status\/1486922870580289538\">said<\/a>. \u201cEspecially in the face of the climate crisis, we need to take the time to make significant and long overdue programmatic reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Environmental groups praised the ruling, calling it a win for the climate and people living in the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a huge victory for our climate, Rice\u2019s whales and Gulf communities,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/court-massive-offshore-oil-lease-sale-in-gulf-based-on-faulty-legal-analysis-2022-01-27\/\">said<\/a> Kristen Monsell, the oceans legal director at the Center for Biological Diversity. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled the court saw through the Biden administration\u2019s horribly reckless decision to hold the largest oil lease sale in U.S. history without carefully studying the risks.
