Pittsburgh Public Safety <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PghPublicSafety\/status\/1487030214903353344\">told<\/a> the public to avoid the area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a boom, then a monster sound,\u201d local resident Melissa Bakth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/local\/city\/2022\/01\/28\/pittsburgh-bridge-collapse-forbes-braddock-avenue-point-breeze-squirrel-hill\/stories\/202201280075\">told<\/a> the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. \u201cIt was so loud, and it didn\u2019t stop. It could\u2019ve been me. I\u2019m on that bridge every day. It\u2019s very, very busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were several other vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed into a ravine, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/28\/pittsburgh-bridge-collapses-near-site-of-biden-remarks\/\">according<\/a> to Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good thing, at this point, is that there\u2019s no fatalities,\u201d Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said. \u201cWe were fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor added that the incident was an example of the need for the city to be allocated resources from Biden\u2019s infrastructure bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve said it before, this bipartisan infrastructure law, it\u2019s critical to Southwest Pennsylvania and the city of Pittsburgh. We know we have bridges that we need to take care of,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the end of the day, we could have had some serious injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press reported that, as of 2005, the bridge saw nearly 15,000 vehicles cross every day. Last inspected in September, it has been known to be in bad shape since at least 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Tom Wolf <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorTomWolf\/status\/1487050347625558016\">said<\/a> that his office was \u201cmonitoring the situation in Pittsburgh and prepared to provide support as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bridge collapse came as Biden was scheduled to visit Pittsburgh on Friday to promote his infrastructure bill and talk about \u201cstrengthening the nation\u2019s supply chains, revitalizing American manufacturing, creating good-paying, union jobs, and building a better America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PressSec\/status\/1487059781877698567\">tweeted<\/a> out that Biden had learned of the bridge collapse and that they were communicating with local and state authorities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She added that Biden was, \u201cgrateful to the first responders who rushed to assist the drivers who were on the bridge at the time.
