Because people are listening really closely to this,\u201d asked LaPook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fauci doubled down: \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to be walking around with a mask.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen you\u2019re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people \u2018feel\u2019 a little better\u201d \u2014 said Fauci with air quotes \u2014 \u201cand it might even block a droplet, but it\u2019s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fauci also mentioned unintended consequences of wearing face masks that stem from improper usage, especially continuous face-touching. He also stated that the supply of face masks should be reserved for healthcare providers and those who are currently infected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During another interview in July of 2020, Fauci said that he did not regret advising against masks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t regret anything I said then because in the context of the time in which I said it, it was correct,\u201d he told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fauci-doesnt-regret-advising-against-masks-early-in-pandemic-2020-7\"><span>CBS Evening News<\/span><\/a> <span>anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell. \u201cWe were told in our task force meetings that we have a serious problem with the lack of PPEs and masks for the health providers who are putting themselves in harm\u2019s way every day to take care of sick people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wear A Mask \u2014 May 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Weeks after his interview with \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d the nation\u2019s leading infectious disease expert began changing his tune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As reported by a March 2020<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/do-you-need-mask-science-hasn-t-changed-public-guidance-n1173006\"><span>NBC News<\/span><\/a> <span>article called \u201cDo you need a mask? The science hasn\u2019t changed, but public guidance might,\u201d Fauci hinted that federal health officials would reconsider their masking protocols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGiven the fact that there is a degree of transmission from asymptomatic individuals who may not know that they\u2019re infected, we need to at least examine the possibility, as long as we\u2019re absolutely certain we don\u2019t take the masks away from who are health care providers who need them,\u201d Fauci explained to NBC News\u2019 Savannah Guthrie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May, Fauci told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/27\/politics\/fauci-coronavirus-wear-masks-cnntv\/index.html\"><span>CNN<\/span><\/a> <span>anchor Jim Sciutto that he began wearing a mask \u201cto protect myself and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that\u2019s the kind of thing you should be doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the next several months, Fauci began appearing on talk shows and encouraging viewers to wear masks. Among other programs, Fauci appeared on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vsym3reI-QU\"><span>The Daily Show with Trevor Noah<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rmfdpX0wG6c\"><span>The Breakfast Club<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NDuaiYf8WDQ&amp;t=\"><span>Try Guys<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Masks After Vaccine \u2014 September 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>By the fall of 2020, Fauci began stating that those who receive the COVID-19 vaccine should continue to wear face masks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI said a combination of an effective vaccine<\/span> <span>and<\/span> <span>adherence to certain public-health principles will get us to the point where we want to be, by the end of 2021,\u201d Fauci told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fauci-the-vaccine-will-not-be-enough-to-stop-coronavirus-2020-9\"><span>Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cI never said just the vaccine. You never should abandon the public-health measures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fauci also expressed doubt that COVID-19 would ever be entirely defeated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to eradicate it,\u201d said Fauci. \u201cWe may not completely eliminate it, but if you get it down to such a very low level, and enough of the population is protected \u2014 either by a vaccine or by previously having been infected \u2014 then you\u2019ll develop a degree of herd immunity that you won\u2019t have an outbreak.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Masks \u2014 February 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>On February 10, the CDC released a study declaring that wearing two masks \u2014 a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask \u2014 is more effective at preventing COVID-19 than wearing only one mask. The study found that the strategy is effective when combined with \u201cother protective measures, such as physical distancing, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and good hand hygiene.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Weeks before the CDC released the study, however, Fauci began publicly hinting his support of the use of multiple masks. On January 25, Fauci told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/25\/dr-fauci-double-mask-during-covid-makes-common-sense-more-effective.html\"><span>TODAY<\/span><\/a> <span>that \u201cif you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with people wearing two masks,\u201d Fauci also said during a February 3<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2021-02-03\/cdc-studying-whether-two-masks-is-better-than-one-for-preventing-coronavirus-spread\"><span>press briefing.<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201cI often myself wear two masks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fauci announced that the CDC would issue a recommendation \u201cwhen the science comes along.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Masks Necessary Until COVID-19 \u2018Not A Threat At All\u2019 \u2014 February 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this week, Fauci told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fauci-says-mask-wearing-must-continue-until-virus-not-a-threat-at-all-likely-into-late-2021\"><span>Fox News<\/span><\/a> <span>anchor Bret Baier that masks will be necessary until COVID-19 is \u201cnot a threat at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIs there going to be a time when we are going to be, no masks?\u201d asked Baier. \u201cWhen is that time? If you had to guess, going to a sports game, going to a theater, going to a concert without a mask?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat will really be dependent upon how we get the level of virus in the community down,\u201d Fauci answered.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf we can get \u2014 and I have used this as an estimate, it\u2019s not definitive \u2014 but if we can get 70 to 85 percent of the population vaccinated, and get to what we would hope would be to a degree of herd immunity, which really is an umbrella or a veil of protection against the community, where the level of virus is so low it\u2019s not a threat at all, then at that point, you can start thinking in terms of not having to have uniform wearing of masks,\u201d continued Fauci.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf everything falls into the right place and we get this under control, it is conceivable that you might be able to pull back a bit on some of the public health measures as we get into the late fall of this year,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut there\u2019s no guarantee of that, because if we don\u2019t get the overwhelming majority of the population vaccinated, there\u2019s still going to be a considerable amount of virus in the community, and as long as that\u2019s the case, people are going to have to wear masks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
