Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) wrote an \u201cInterested Parties\u201d&nbsp;memo&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/nyirc.gov\/storage\/comments\/ZuUbUBU9dxrIjHQNQJKf3gvRoj7VRuHVdMmsuvig.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">titled<\/a> \u201cPreserving and Strengthening Communities of Interest\u201d that urges the legislature to \u201ccorrect the errors of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: national Dems are using a &#8220;communities of interest&#8221; argument to urge their Albany counterparts to adopt an aggressive 23D-3R gerrymander that could wipe out five of NY&#8217;s eight GOP seats. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XobNDsugKf\">https:\/\/t.co\/XobNDsugKf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K46GUBj9ip\">pic.twitter.com\/K46GUBj9ip<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1486472462200197120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The memo reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In New York City and the surrounding areas, the current map does a serviceable job ensuring that communities are linked together and that minority representation is strong \u2013 as the New York State constitution requires. Of course, communities have changed over the past decade and the new map should reflect that. Ultimately, although lines may shift or expand, the districts must preserve the ability of minority communities to elect their chosen representatives to Congress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ironically, Maloney accused Republicans last June of using gerrymandering to gain political power. \u201cWhile Republicans clearly think their best way back to power is suppressing and gerrymandering their way to a majority, Democrats are committed to the fight of protecting and expanding voting rights for all Americans,\u201d he&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/dccc.org\/dccc-chairman-rep-sean-patrick-maloney-statement-on-republicans-blocking-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Republican New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis called the DCCC\u2019s proposal a \u201cdesperate attempt to tilt the scale to give Democrats an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malliotakis&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dccc-issues-support-aggressive-new-york-gerrymander-could-eliminate-5-gop-seats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Fox News:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The people of the state of New York voted, not once but twice, for non-partisan redistricting. To entertain a map drawn by Nancy Pelosi\u2019s chief campaign operative and head of a DC organization focused on only electing Democrats to Congress is highly inappropriate, defies the will of New York\u2019s voters and is a direct assault on the state constitution. They know they can\u2019t win on policy, merit, or debate so this is a desperate attempt to tilt the scale to give Democrats an advantage.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This year\u2019s redistricting is the first cycle since New York voters&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/New_York_Redistricting_Commission_Amendment,_Proposal_1_(2014)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted<\/a>&nbsp;a bipartisan redistricting commission in 2014. DCCC communications director Chris Hayden defended Maloney\u2019s advocacy. \u201cThe state\u2019s public comment process is critical to a healthy democracy and the only venue for public comment, so as a citizen of the state Congressman Maloney chose to participate in that process,\u201d he&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/jan\/27\/dccc-chair-submits-partisan-gerrymander-proposal-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the <em>Washington Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposed map, the only \u201csafe\u201d Republicans would be Reps.
