Rowling\u2019s book <em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher\u2019s Stone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The University of Chester\u2019s English Department lists&nbsp;<em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher\u2019s Stone<\/em> as one of the three set literary texts on their&nbsp;\u201cApproaches to Literature\u201d module, but have found it necessary to include the trigger warning that these books could lead to \u201cdifficult conversations about&nbsp;gender, race, sexuality, class, and identity\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Chester\u2019s English Department added the trigger warning marked \u201cCONTENT WARNING\u201d to the bottom of the module\u2019s reading list, which features two children\u2019s books besides the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> title, Philip Pullman\u2019s <em>Northern Lights and&nbsp;<\/em>Suzanne Collins\u2019 <em>The Hunger Games.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The content warning in full read:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201c<strong>CONTENT WARNING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although we are studying a selection of Young Adult texts on this Module, the nature of the theories we apply to them can lead to some difficult conversations about gender, race, sexuality, class, and identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These topics will be treated objectively, critically, and most crucially, with respect. If anyone has any issues with the content, please get in touch with the Module Leader to make them aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Course leader&nbsp;Dr Richard Leahy may possibly have betrayed a historic disdain for Rowling, tweeting in 2019: \u201cJK Rowling reveals that he is not the best mate of mine\u201d, the&nbsp;<em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10447317\/University-Chester-puts-trigger-warning-Harry-Potter-module-difficult-conversations.html\">reports<\/a>. Leahy has since <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/richardleahylit\">deleted<\/a> his Twitter account.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The <em>Daily Mail<\/em>, for their part, states the \u201cApproaches to Literature\u201d module at Chester University is the only English module at Chester they could find that has a content warning \u2013 with the English department not adding any warnings for modules featuring Shakesphere\u2019s sometimes graphically violent works and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s opium-addicted sleuth Sherlock Holmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A spokesperson from the University of Chester suggested their English department \u201cpromote rather than avoid discussion\u201d on \u201call the issues, challenges and complexity of humankind\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When asked why the trigger warning was only added to this reading list, the University claimed that the \u201ccontent warning\u201d is \u201ca standard form of words for level 4 students \u2013 usually joining from school or college\u201d, and the warning was added, \u201cto reiterate that young adult texts can also prompt important conversations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The University of Chester also claimed that all their reading lists contain a \u201cgeneric paragraph\u201d to \u201cdraw attention to the opportunity for individual students to talk with tutors if anything is particularly difficult because of its personal relevance\u201d \u2013 however, the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>\u2018s investigation did not corroborate this.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u2018People who menstruate.\u2019 I\u2019m sure there used to be a word for those people. Rowling (@jk_rowling) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269382518362509313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 6, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Rowling has been an outspoken critic of the radical transgender movement and became a target for harassment by extremist transgender activists by tweeting out in support of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/11\/16\/transgender-awareness-week-renews-criticism-of-j-k-rowling-for-supporting-womens-rights\/\">Maya Forstater<\/a>&nbsp;in December 2019, a British tax expert who was fired after tweeting that \u201cmen cannot change into women\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Rowling at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1207646162813100033?s=20\">tweeted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cDress however you please.<br \/>Call yourself whatever you like.<br \/>Sleep with any consenting adult who\u2019ll have you.<br \/>Live your best life in peace and security.<br \/>But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?&nbsp;#IStandWithMaya&nbsp;#ThisIsNotADrill\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Rowling has made several other statements on women\u2019s rights issues that have inadvertently provoked pro-transgender radicals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jk_rowling\/status\/1269382518362509313?s=20\">tweeting<\/a> out in June 2020: \u201cPeople who menstruate. I\u2019m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund?
