I think Hayden would still be alive today if COVID had never happened,\u201d Hunstable told Metro. \u201cI had no idea he was struggling or depressed \u2014 he was such a happy kid and loved his friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Describing the situation his son faced as \u201ca perfect storm for suicide and depression,\u201d Hunstable believes \u201ceverything just got on top of him, he felt overwhelmed and he made a tragic decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recalling the tragic day when his young daughter ran downstairs telling him her brother had killed himself, Hunstable said, \u201cOn April 17 our water went out at the house and my dad came over, Hayden helped us fix it. It was a beautiful sunny day and I gave him a hug and a kiss on the head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when my dad left there was just me, Kinlee and Hayden at home,\u201d Hunstable continued. \u201cThere was only a 30-minute window, Hayden had gone upstairs. Then my daughter ran downstairs and said Hayden has hung himself. I ran up there, pulled him down and tried to save him. I performed CPR but I couldn\u2019t save him. He was gone. I saw something horrific that day and I don\u2019t wish it upon anybody. I still get nightmares about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunstable said virtual learning and social isolation hit his son particularly hard. \u201cHe loved football, and he loved being around people. He was very social. He was a little guy, but he had the heart of a lion. He was beloved by his friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayden had also accidentally broken two computer monitors he was using for school and to play games with his friends, which his father speculated might have made him even more upset. \u201cI don\u2019t know if he was scared about getting into trouble or anxious about not being able to speak to his friends and ruining his birthday,\u201d he said. \u201cHe either did it in impulsive anger or he got himself in a situation he couldn\u2019t get out of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since his son\u2019s death, Hunstable has started Hayden\u2019s Corner, an organization that aims to help parents talk with their kids about their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH:<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hayden&#039;s Corner - Brad Hunstable on the tragic death of his son Hayden\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VJTHFhVyyqI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Suicidal ideation has skyrocketed among young people during the pandemic and its fallout, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
