On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/10\/movies\/oscars-diversity.html\">The New York Times<\/a> published a column detailing the potential diversity of this year\u2019s nominations, but noted that \u201cthe problem isn\u2019t solved\u201d and \u201csome old biases remain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite began in 2015, Hollywood started a process of requiring more diversity and inclusion. However, the question remains as to whether or not their efforts will ever be enough for those who find fault with the industry.<\/p>\n<p>In June of last year, the same New York Times columnist wrote a piece titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/30\/movies\/academy-oscars-new-members.html\">\u201cAfter #OscarsSoWhite, the Academy Meets Goal to Diversify Membership.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/09\/movies\/oscars-best-picture-diversity.html\">report<\/a> came a few months later, as the Academy announced additional diversity requirements for best picture films, even though \u201cinclusion goals were met months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newest guidelines are supposed to take effect by 2024, and \u201cwill require films to meet two of four diversity standards to be eligible for a best-picture nomination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four different standards range from persons to plot. They include stipulations surrounding the actors, crew members, and department heads. There are also conditions on the details of a film\u2019s storyline. The distribution and financing company are also involved in the diversity requirements, including interns. For distribution, production, or financing companies, there must be training and work opportunities provided to people from specified \u201cunderrepresented groups.\u201d The fourth and final potential categorical requirement is reportedly \u201csimpler,\u201d and \u201cmerely asks that some of the senior marketing, publicity and distribution executives on a film are from an underrepresented group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of these efforts and the likelihood of diversity at the Academy Awards this year, time will tell whether it is adequate for Hollywood\u2019s critics. The columnist acknowledges that \u201cthis particular year could produce the most diverse lineup of Oscar nominees ever,\u201d but argues that this might result in \u201cHollywood giv[ing] out those laurels and then rest[ing] on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The writer then points to various examples of a continued lack of diversity, including this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldenglobes.com\/articles\/2021-nominations-78th-golden-globe-awards-have-been-announced\">Golden Globes nominations<\/a> and remarks how its most prestigious category \u2014 \u201cbest drama\u201d \u2014 did not include any of \u201cthe year\u2019s major Black-led films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Audiences may remember last year\u2019s awards ceremony before the pandemic hit, when \u201cParasite\u201d became the first film not in the English language to win best picture, but the author laments that it still \u201ccouldn\u2019t earn a single nomination in the acting categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though a Korean movie has now won best picture at the Oscars, no Korean or Korean-American actor has ever so much as been nominated,\u201d the columnist continues, adding a question as to whether or not the actors of this year\u2019s Korean film \u201cMinari\u201d can \u201cbreak through those long-held biases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">According to this columnist, the results of each year\u2019s awards season don\u2019t necessarily prove that progress has been achieved.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><em>No matter what happens this awards season or the next, voters should remember that progress isn\u2019t simply secured \u2014 it\u2019s something you have to keep reaching for.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><em>Back in 2014, there were people of color in most of the acting categories, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n (\u2018Gravity\u2019) won the directing Oscar, and Steve McQueen\u2019s \u201912 Years a Slave\u2019 took best picture.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><em>The very next year kicked off #OscarsSoWhite.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
