President Joe Biden briefly commented on the news, but said people should wait for Breyer to make a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Breyer is one of three remaining liberal justices, and his decision to retire after more than 27 years on the Supreme Court will allow Biden to appoint a successor.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat president will likely replace the liberal Supreme Court justice with another liberal justice.<\/p>\n<p>What Happens Now<\/p>\n<p>With a split Senate, President Biden could look to nominate a moderate liberal justice in an attempt to receive the bipartisan support necessary to confirm a justice.<\/p>\n<p>However, the President already laid the groundwork for identity politics to play a role during his campaign, saying he would nominate a black woman if the opportunity presented itself. Some also say that Vice President Kamala Harris could be Biden\u2019s Supreme Court pick, though it appears unlikely at the moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is another potentially divisive obstacle the Biden administration must face during a midterm election year, amidst already low approval numbers, historic rates of inflation, and continued foreign policy challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of Breyer\u2019s retirement is potentially political, given that he\u2019s retiring under a Democrat president.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335265\" class=\"size-full wp-image-335265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Stephen-McCarthyContributorSportsfile-via-Getty-Images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/01\/Stephen-McCarthyContributorSportsfile-via-Getty-Images.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/01\/Stephen-McCarthyContributorSportsfile-via-Getty-Images-300x194.jpg 300w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-335265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stephen McCarthy\/Contributor\/Sportsfile via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Human Rights Organizations Condemn Harsh COVID Policies<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Topline: Several nations\u2019 COVID restrictions against unvaccinated people have drawn condemnation from human rights organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Italy<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mario Draghi recently made Italy\u2019s restrictive COVID policies much stricter, issuing a vaccine mandate for everyone over the age of 50. He\u2019s also ordered that, from now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/16\/dont-discriminate-against-the-unvaccinated-amnesty-international-tells-italy.html\">until June 15<\/a>, unvaccinated Italians can\u2019t use public transportation, and people over 50 cannot go to work, if they can\u2019t prove they have been vaccinated \u2013 even if they wear a mask and show a negative COVID test. He also denied access to anything but the most basic necessities to those without a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/italy-travel-covid-19\/index.html\">super green pass<\/a>,\u201d which means the individual has had three COVID shots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In response, Amnesty International Italia issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.it\/posizione-di-amnesty-international-italia-sulle-misure-adottate-dal-governo-per-combattere-il-covid-19\/\">statement<\/a> raising serious alarm over the move. While the statement upholds the right of limited mandates, it says, \u201cstates should focus on increasing voluntary vaccine adherence\u201d and calls on the government to let unvaccinated people work or use public transportation \u201cwithout discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/dont-discriminate-against-the-unvaccinated-amnesty-international-tells-italy\/ar-AASPMGf\">reads<\/a> in part: \u201cThe government must continue to ensure that the entire population can enjoy its fundamental rights, such as the right to education, work, and medical treatment \u2026 [They] should not be penalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group said the government must also guarantee the right to peacefully protest against COVID-19 policies without taking \u201cany act of unjustified aggression or violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Countries<\/p>\n<p>In Ghana, the Health Ministry considered instituting a system of vaccine passports to access public accommodations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The chapter of the International Human Rights Commission that oversees the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primenewsghana.com\/general-news\/human-rights-group-condemns-govt-s-mandatory-covid-vaccination.html\">responded<\/a>, saying, \u201cVaccination should be by choice and not by force. \u2026 [W]e think that it is advisable for the government to allow ordinary Ghanaians to decide, rather than imposing it on them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/10\/26\/cambodia-vaccine-mandates-raise-rights-concerns\">condemned<\/a> Cambodia for requiring everyone from age 6 and up to show proof of vaccination to enter virtually any public or private accommodation, including grocery markets. However, the group says the government didn\u2019t educate the public about the rules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eight human rights groups, including Amnesty International, signed a statement last May accusing the Cambodian government of using COVID-19 measures to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/05\/25\/cambodia-stop-silencing-critical-commentary-covid-19\">quash<\/a> independent journalism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some international observers warn that the restrictions can pose a threat to democracy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch condemned the military government of Myanmar, where the military overthrew the democratically-elected National League for Democracy last year.
