Relevant government units will also be prepared to respond to various emergencies,\u201d the statement added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The MAC did not describe what sort of \u201cemergencies\u201d it had in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Taiwanese athletes usually register for international sporting events under the name \u201cChinese Taipei,\u201d a moniker chosen to avoid angering Beijing, which insists Taiwan must not be treated as a separate country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>South China Morning Post<\/span><\/i> <span>(<em>SCMP<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/article\/3164693\/winter-olympics-taiwan-says-no-officials-will-go-beijing-games-athletes\">quoted<\/a> a senior Taiwanese official who said his government is concerned China might force its athletes to compete alongside the team from Hong Kong, \u201cdowngrading\u201d Taiwan\u2019s status by treating it as just another \u201cspecial administrative region\u201d of China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>SCMP <\/span><\/i><span>noted Taiwan is a sub-tropical island with little general interest in winter sports, although public enthusiasm for the Olympics perked up after the Taiwanese team <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/sports\/202108070014#:~:text=OLYMPICS%2FFor%20Taiwanese%20athletes%2C%20Tokyo%20Olympics%20their%20best%20ever&amp;text=Taipei%2C%20Aug.,medals%20as%20of%20Saturday%20evening.\"><span>won<\/span><\/a><span> its most medals ever at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Taiwan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/sports\/202201190016\"><span>anticipated<\/span><\/a><span> sending no more than six athletes to the Beijing Winter Games, plus a small group of coaches, doctors, and support personnel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As of Wednesday, only four Taiwanese athletes have qualified for the Winter Games: speed skater Huang Yu-ting, skiers Lee Wen-yi and Ho Ping-jui, and women\u2019s luge singles competitor Lin Sing-rong. Two others have until Saturday to qualify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/news\/sports\/tokyo-summer-olympics\/taiwan-hong-kong-welcome-at-beijing-2022-winter-games-ioc\/2575651\/\"><span>firmly insisted<\/span><\/a><span> Beijing agreed to let Taiwan participate, without special humiliations, when it secured the 2022 Winter Games in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Beijing Winter Olympics arrive during a season of heightened tensions between Taiwan and China. On Sunday night, China <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/01\/25\/china-boasts-it-will-tie-a-noose-around-the-neck-of-taiwan-with-warplanes\/\"><span>conducted<\/span><\/a><span> its largest incursion into Taiwan\u2019s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) this year.
