Dick Durbin sent letters to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation on Wednesday asking them to take action in response to a recent spike in carjackings.<\/p>\n<p>Durbin, who serves as Senate Majority Whip and chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/DRAFT%20Letter%20on%20Carjackings%20-%20to%20DOT%20-%20Jan%2026.pdf\">called<\/a>&nbsp;on Buttigieg to establish public-private partnerships with automotive manufacturers in order to help authorities find stolen vehicles, and create uniform standards for vehicle telemetry tools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, I urge the Department to work with the auto industry and law enforcement to coordinate uniform and standardized methods for law enforcement to seek vehicle manufacturers\u2019 assistance in locating stolen vehicles,\u201d Durbin wrote to Buttigieg. \u201cThis will help decrease carjacking incidents by assisting law enforcement in recovering stolen vehicles sooner, identifying perpetrators faster, and preventing stolen cars from being used in other crimes.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/18\/att-verizon-5g-faa-pete-buttigieg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: AT&amp;T, Verizon Delay 5G Rollout After Airlines Warn Of \u2018Catastrophic Disruption,\u2019 Potential Hazards)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7153889\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7153889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Committee Chair Sen. (Photo by Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Durbin also sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/DRAFT%20Letter%20on%20Carjackings%20-%20to%20AAI%20-%20Jan%2026.pdf\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosinnovate.org\/\">trade group<\/a>&nbsp;representing automobile manufacturers, demanding they \u201cdo more\u201d to help deal with carjackings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe auto industry must do more to provide law enforcement with the tools they need to combat carjacking,\u201d Durbin wrote. \u201cDeveloping uniform industry procedures to make it easier for law enforcement to contact manufacturers and access valuable location data on stolen vehicles would be an important first step \u2026 and I am prepared to support this effort any way I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letters follow a nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/carjackings-rise-nationwide-investigators-juveniles-responsible\">spike<\/a>&nbsp;in carjacking incidents within major cities, with Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minnesota, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C., all reporting significant increases, according to Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Pennsylvania Rep. Mary Scanlon was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/22\/mary-gay-scanlon-carjacked-philadelphia-franklin-delano-roosevelt-park\/\">carjacked<\/a>&nbsp;at gunpoint in December 2021 while in Philadelphia, which soon after sent out a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/14\/philadelphia-police-carjackings\/\">guide<\/a>&nbsp;to residents informing them of how best to deal with carjackers due to the spike in incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
