While speaking at the the Economic Club of New York on Wednesday, he noted the actual U.S. jobless rate stands at around 10 percent compared to an official reading of 6.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperience tells us that getting to and staying at full employment will not be easy,\u201d he stated. \u201cIn the near term, policies that bring the pandemic to an end as soon as possible are paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell added, more stimulus may be necessary to boost employment following COVID-19 shutdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present, we are a long way from such a labor market,\u201d he continued. \u201cFully realizing the benefits of a strong labor market will take continued support from both near-term policy and longer-run investments, so that all those seeking jobs have the skills and opportunities that will enable them to contribute to and share in the benefits of prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Speech by Chair Powell on getting back to a strong labor market: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6dLhcqhjDk\">https:\/\/t.co\/6dLhcqhjDk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watch live: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mO6WL1NNUX\">https:\/\/t.co\/mO6WL1NNUX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Federal Reserve (@federalreserve) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/federalreserve\/status\/1359578131284303874?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The top central banker also said the Federal Reserve will not increase interest rates in the foreseeable future.
