Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican who also serves as president of the state Senate, announced the effort after one of the state\u2019s professional basketball teams revealed it stopped playing the anthem before games, breaking with an American tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The act is known as the Star-Spangled Protection Act, or Senate Bill 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to believe this could happen in Texas, but Mark Cuban\u2019s actions of yesterday made it clear that we must specify that in Texas we play the national anthem before all major events,\u201d Patrick said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this time when so many things divide us, sports are one thing that bring us together\u2014right, left, black, white, and brown. This legislation already enjoys broad support. I am certain it will pass, and the Star-Spangled Banner will not be threatened in the Lone Star State again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans hold a 5 vote majority in the upper chamber and a 16 seat majority in the lower chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Cuban, the owner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-nba\">NBA<\/a>\u2019s Dallas Mavericks, ordered the team before the season not to play the national anthem before games. (Rich Fury\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The league <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/nba-to-force-dallas-mavericks-to-play-national-anthem-before-games_3692568.html\">weighed in on Wednesday<\/a>, ordering the Mavericks and other teams to abide by league policy that requires playing the anthem before tipoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith\u00a0NBA\u00a0teams now in the process of welcoming fans back into their arenas, all teams will play the\u00a0national anthem\u00a0in keeping with longstanding league policy,\u201d the NBA\u2019s chief communications officer, Mike Bass, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Cuban said in a statement that he hoped people passionate about the anthem \u201cwill take the same passion they have for this issue and apply the same amount of energy to listen to those who feel differently from them,\u201d adding: \u201cOnly then we can move forward and have courageous conversations that move this country forward and find what unites us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mavericks players and coaches told a team reporter that they supported Cuban amid the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I\u2019ll say about Mark is he\u2019s not scared of what\u2019s being talked about,\u201d center Willie Cauley-Stein said. \u201cAnd he\u2019s not scared of doing what\u2019s right. He\u2019s got a very diverse team and for us as players, when your owner is behind you like that, that\u2019s big.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark\u2019s an owner who is very involved, to say the least.
