\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Europe\u2019s \u2018heavy dependence\u2019 on Russian gas for energy has left nations on the continent scrambling for alternatives over supply fears.<\/p>\n<p>As European alarm over Ukraine continues, EU countries have been left scrambling for alternatives to natural gas supplied by Russia, with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggesting the continent\u2019s \u201cheavy dependence\u201d could affect how nations respond to geopolitical issues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Germany in particular \u2014 which receives reportedly a third of its gas supply from Russia \u2014 has recently been praised by Russia as one of its \u201cmain partners in Western Europe\u201d not long after the country blocked so-called \u201clethal aid\u201d from being sent to Ukraine from other NATO member states.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jan\/26\/australia-could-send-extra-gas-to-europe-as-russia-cuts-supplies-due-to-ukraine-tensions\">report<\/a> by&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>, Europe has begun looking as far afield as Australia to bolster its gas supply in case supply from Russia is cut off completely.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to British PM Boris Johnson, while the UK is \u201cin a stronger position to resist the Russian gas blackmail\u201d \u2014 with Russian supply only making up three per cent of UK gas \u2014 he expressed concerns regarding the position of other allies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI think the house needs to understand that one of the big issues that we all face in dealing with Ukraine, in dealing with Russia, is the heavy dependence of our European friends in particular on Russian gas,\u201d Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/jan\/25\/johnson-hints-german-reliance-on-russian-gas-could-affect-ukraine-response\">told<\/a> parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Germany may be one of those countries, having already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-blocks-estonian-arms-exports-to-ukraine-report\/a-60520988\">blocked<\/a> the export of arms from ally Estonia to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The country also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/arielcohen\/2022\/01\/24\/western-reluctance-on-nord-stream-ii-gas-pipeline-swift-emboldens-russia\/\">appears<\/a> very reluctant to impose sanctions on Russian projects, such as the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>Russia even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1393355\">praised<\/a> the European country on Wednesday, saying that there had been no slowdown in communications between Germany and Russia since left-wing Chancellor Olaf Scholz took power.<\/p>\n<p>In comments that appeared to amount to Russia thanking Germany for being well behaved,&nbsp;a Russian presidential spokesman said according to&nbsp;Russian News Agency TASS:&nbsp;\u201cIt hasn\u2019t been long [since Scholz took office], undoubtedly, the chancellor has a lot of domestic issues to tackle, we can see Western Europe\u2019s frenzy about Ukraine and so on\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGermany is one of our main partners in Western Europe and we very much value our relations, we do expect that they will continue to flourish,\u201d the spokesman a heavy reliance on Russian fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Gas prices across the bloc have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/01\/13\/european-gas-reserves-dwindle-prices-soaring-cold-winter-could-mean-gas-disaster\/\">continued<\/a> to soar in recent months, partially as a result of Russian suppliers cutting the volume going to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/ukraine-linked-sanctions-may-threaten-ireland-s-energy-security-coveney-1.4785736\">warned<\/a> that the Ukraine crisis posed a risk to the nation\u2019s energy security, with sanctions possibly resulting in the hampering of coal deliveries needed to power Ireland\u2019s largest power station.<\/p>\n<p>French finance minister&nbsp;Bruno Le Maire has meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/business\/world\/eu-hamstrung-in-ukraine-due-to-reliance-on-russian-gas-says-french-minister-41276155.html\">criticised<\/a> Europe\u2019s reliance on Russia for energy, arguing that nuclear energy would help build up a \u201cstrategic independence\u201d regarding energy, according to the&nbsp;<em>Irish Independent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening at the Russian border, and at the Ukrainian border at the moment, is going to show us, in an increasingly obvious way, that the energy dependence of Europe is something which knows no price,\u201d the minister said. \u201cWe cannot continue to be as dependent on Russian gas, simply because this limits the political independence of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States has meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jan\/25\/us-europe-russia-gas-supplies-energy\">begun<\/a> finalising plans to divert supplies to Europe in the event that Russia does cut off the supply of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo ensure Europe is able to make it through the winter and spring we expect to be prepared to ensure alternative supplies covering a significant majority of the
