Formerly prominent neoconservative Bill Kristol, who is seen as an archetypal establishment conservative, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2019\/01\/23\/bill-kristol-correctly-describes-newsguard-establishment-people-like-establishment-websites\/\">said of Newsguard in 2019<\/a>: \u201cI guess the counter-argument to what you\u2019re doing is, well, this is a bunch of establishment people deciding they like establishment websites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NewsGuard maintains a list of news outlets it considers \u201ctrustworthy\u201d and \u201cuntrustworthy,\u201d data which it uses in a browser extension that users can add on to various mainstream browsers, including Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.<\/p>\n<p>When the extension is installed, it displays red warning labels alongside links to websites NewsGuard considers untrustworthy, and green labels next to links to websites it considers trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, NewsGuard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2019\/01\/23\/microsoft-teams-with-establishment-newsguard-to-create-news-blacklist\/\">partnered with Microsoft<\/a>&nbsp;in a deal that made it a default extension on Edge Mobile browsers.<\/p>\n<p>NewsGuard gives a \u201cgreen\u201d rating to websites like&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone,&nbsp;<\/em>which has repeatedly published high-profile hoax stories. The magazine was responsible for one of the biggest media scandals in recent memory, when it published fraudulent rape claims against a fraternity at the University of Virginia in 2014.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/09\/08\/newsguard-gives-green-rating-to-repeated-hoax-publisher-rolling-stone-red-to-critics\/\">More recently<\/a>, the magazine ran a story containing the false claim that hospitals in Oklahoma were overflowing due to Ivermectin poisoning cases, as well as a news story claiming Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R)o was \u201cdetermined to put kids in danger.\u201d NewsGuard still claims the&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone&nbsp;<\/em>website \u201cadheres to basic standards of credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BuzzFeed News, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/\">published the infamous, debunked \u201cpee dossier\u201d in 2017<\/a>, also gets a green rating from NewsGuard.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, NewsGuard gives Breitbart News a \u201cred\u201d rating, falsely claiming that the website does not \u201cregularly correct or clarify errors,\u201d and that it does not \u201chandle the separation between news and opinion responsibly\u201d (all Breitbart News opinion articles, which represent less than 10 percent of the website\u2019s content, are clearly distinguished from news articles by the presence of the author\u2019s name in the headline).<\/p>\n<p>NewsGuard also makes the same allegation about news and opinion of&nbsp;the <em>Epoch Times,&nbsp;<\/em>an independent newspaper founded by dissidents against the Communist regime in China. Yet the&nbsp;<em>Times&nbsp;<\/em>does separate news and opinion, with a clearly-labeled \u201copinion\u201d section and a \u201ccommentary\u201d label for all opinion columns.<\/p>\n<p>In a comment to Breitbart News, NewsGuard general manager Matt Skibinski defended the ratings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNewsGuard\u2019s rating of each website includes a detailed explanation of our reasoning,\u201d said Skibinski. \u201cIf we claim a site repeatedly publishes false claims, uses deceptive headlines, fails to correct errors reliably, or otherwise fails one of the nine criteria we assess, we provide numerous specific examples demonstrating that. We also contact the publication and give them a chance to resolve any issues or provide a response, which we include in our written explanation. The purpose of this transparent approach is so that each reader can see not only our ratings, but also the reasoning and evidence behind each rating and ultimately make their own decision about how much to trust the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see detailed explanations of our rationale for our ratings of the sites you\u2019ve asked about through our browser extension\u2013and each user of the extension has access to exactly the same information,\u201d Skibinski continued. \u201cYou\u2019ll also see, if you look up our rating and explanation for Breitbart.com, that we include extensive comments from Breitbart\u2019s Editor-in-Chief that challenge our assessment and provide Breitbart\u2019s perspective on why the site should get a higher score.
