Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) in which she said the \u201cLoudoun County School Board spent about $300,000 \u2013 that\u2019s real money, that\u2019s going-to-jail money \u2013 to bring [Critical Race Theory] CRT in some form or fashion to the school system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact claimed in its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/jan\/24\/winsome-sears\/did-loudoun-county-va-schools-pay-about-300000-cri\/\">fact check<\/a>\u201d that Earle-Sears vastly overstated the amount of money spent by the Loudoun County School Board:<\/p>\n<p><em>We asked Earle-Sears\u2019 office three times for the source of her claim about Loudoun\u2019s $300,000 investment in critical race theory and did not get a reply. It seems apparent, however, that she greatly overstated the $34,167 cost of seminars about critical race theory and equity training the Loudoun school system held for top officials in late spring, 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wayde Byard, said the seminar was held to familiarize senior school officials with critical race theory. \u201cIt\u2019s an academic construct that\u2019s been around 45 years,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We asked Byard if the county has spent funds on critical race theory beyond the $34,167 for the seminars. \u201cNo, that\u2019s about it,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact also reached out to a school spokesperson who said the county has not spent anything beyond the $34,167 amount on CRT. For that, PolitiFact rated Earle-Sears\u2019 comment as \u201cMostly False.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But The Daily Caller\u2019s Chrissy Clark posted screenshots of expenditures showing Loudoun County <em>did<\/em> spend upward of $300,000 to Equity Collaborative LLC, which <a href=\"https:\/\/theequitycollaborative.com\/what-is-equity-coaching\/\">says<\/a> it provides \u201cequity coaching\u201d to \u201cto help organizations develop their own capacity to create educational equity and social justice by addressing bias and oppression.\u201d While the website predictably doesn\u2019t say it promotes CRT, yet all the hallmarks of its influence are there.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolitiFact?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PolitiFact<\/a> is calling out <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WinsomeSears?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WinsomeSears<\/a> for \u201cfalsely claiming\u201d that LCPS paid \u201cabout $300,000\u201d for critical race theory-inspired training.<\/p>\n<p>Well, your humble Poynter alumni is here with receipts. And LCPS DID pay upwards of $300k for such training<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/67dfCjaORz\">https:\/\/t.co\/67dfCjaORz<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OXT78tRiHm\">pic.twitter.com\/OXT78tRiHm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chrissy Clark (@chrissyclark_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrissyclark_\/status\/1486005872316891139?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The screenshots from Clark show the Loudoun County school system made seven payments to Equity Collaborative since 2018, with the largest payment made in June 2019 for a whopping $242,000. The final payment, made in June 2020, was for $34,167 \u2013 the exact amount PolitiFact and Byard said the school paid in total. Adding up the payments totals more than $300,000.<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact has yet to correct or update its fact check of Earle-Sears, and also appeared to miss that this topic was addressed by former George W. Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen in The Washington Post last November. As Thiessen wrote at the time:<\/p>\n<p><em>Virginia\u2019s Loudoun County Public Schools, which were ground zero in the debate over the role of parents in their kids\u2019 education, paid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/defendinged.org\/report\/the-equity-collaborative\/\">$314,000<\/a>&nbsp;for critical race theory coaching for its teachers from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theequitycollaborative.com\/\">Equity Collaborative<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a consulting firm that turns critical race theory into practices for \u201cbuilding more equitable learning environments.\u201d In its presentation \u201cIntroduction to Critical Race Theory\u201d the Equity Collaborative instructs teachers that racism is \u201can inherent part of American civilization\u201d and attacks \u201cideas of colorblindness, the neutrality of the law, incremental change, and equal opportunity for all\u201d for maintaining \u201cwhites\u2019 power and strongholds within society.\u201d It also questions \u201cthe idea of meritocracy\u201d which \u201callows the empowered \u2026 to feel \u2018good\u2019 and have a clear conscience\u201d and concludes with a breakout session for teachers to discuss \u201cHow might you use CRT to identify and address systemic oppression in your school, district or organization?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Hot Air <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/john-s-2\/2022\/01\/25\/politifacts-fact-check-of-va-lt-gov-appears-to-have-missed-something-n443959\">pointed out<\/a>, the organization that discovered the CRT spending, Parents Defending Education, \u201cactually&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/defendinged.org\/report\/the-equity-collaborative\/\">split the district\u2019s spending<\/a> into two categories, $34,000 for Equity Collaborative training including CRT and another $314,000 for EQ \u2018training.\u2019 Maybe this is the gimmick that Politifact is relying on.
