Of the nearly 1,000 elected officials eligible to vote in the presidential election, which includes members of the chamber of deputies, the Italian senate and regional politicians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/news\/politica\/male-subito-fumata-nera-e-i-grandi-elettori-si-divertono-2004760.html\">672 placed blank votes<\/a> in the ceremonial urns in the Chamber of Deputies on Monday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Of the votes cast for actual candidates, judge Paolo Maddalena received the most votes at 36, while outgoing president Sergio Matterella saw 16 votes. Former Italian Prime Minister&nbsp;Bettino Craxi also received votes, despite being dead for the last 22 years, SVT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/utrikes\/annu-ovisst-vem-som-blir-italiens-president\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the first round of voting, the various Italian political parties have agreed to talk to each other about choosing a suitable candidate for the Italian presidency.<\/p>\n<p>One name that has been floated by some is current Prime Minister Mario Draghi but some, like populist League leader Senator Matteo Salvini, are against Draghi leaving as Prime Minister and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/news\/politica\/salvini-cerca-voti-i-giallorossi-offritegli-caff-2004923.html\">urged followers<\/a> to negotiate with political rivals to keep Draghi in as Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTry to convince the parliamentarians of the other camps, make it clear that the era of cultural subjection to the left is over, offer them coffee,\u201d Salvini is reported to have advised his followers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Silvio Berlusconi Admitted to Hospital, Drops Out of Italian Presidential Race<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1xWMarzftk\">https:\/\/t.co\/1xWMarzftk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1485311370824458245?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gianfranco Pasquino, an Italian political scientist and professor at the University of Bologna, stated that Italy could face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/24\/italy-presidential-vote-begins-political-upheaval-ahead-with-reforms.html\">possible instability<\/a> if Draghi moves into the presidential role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no precedent. No previous prime minister has ever become president of the Republic and if Mario Draghi becomes president there will be the problem of creating a new government and this will be a very complex problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA government crisis would be very bad at this point in time because we\u2019re trying to produce the projects to get the European money, the European funds,\u201d Pasquino added.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, another vote was taken and yet again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/italian-party-chiefs-struggle-to-nail-deal-on-next-president\/2022\/01\/25\/256b42f0-7df3-11ec-8cc8-b696564ba796_story.html\">no clear winner emerged<\/a> with the needed 2\/3rds majority of votes.
