Ron DeSantis is \u201chopping mad\u201d over the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) decision to pull emergency use authorization of monoclonal antibody treatments and has vowed to \u201cfight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 25 more than 2,000 Floridians woke up to emails and text messages telling them their appointments to receive monoclonal therapies were canceled due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-limits-use-certain-monoclonal-antibodies-treat-covid-19-due-omicron\">FDA\u2019s decision<\/a>, the governor\u2019s office reported.<\/p>\n<p>This brought ire from the governor and prompted him to speak out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a shred of clinical data to support this action [President Joe] Biden has forced trained medical professionals to choose between treating their patients or breaking the law,\u201d DeSantis said in a press statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are real world implications to Biden\u2019s medical authoritarianism\u2014American\u2019s access to treatments is now subject to the whims of a failing president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said in a press conference on Jan. 25 that \u201cthis is not how you help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government is going above and beyond to deny access to people,\u201d DeSantis continued. \u201cNow [patients] are being told that it would be illegal for a provider to give it to them\u2014all based off one observational non-peer reviewed study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his statement he demanded that the Biden administration reverse its \u201creckless decision\u201d to revoke EUA for Regeneron and Eli Lilly monoclonal antibody treatments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4149924\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4149924\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/12\/10\/CORONAVIRUS-VACCINES-BOOSTERS-1200x800-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Signage is seen outside of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) headquarters in White Oak, Md., on Aug. 29, 2020. (Andrew Kelly\/Reuters)<\/figure>\n<p>Monoclonal antibodies are described by the FDA as \u201claboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system\u2019s ability to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses, like SARS-CoV-2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDA also said that SARS-CoV-2 can \u201cmutate over time and can suppress certain treatments against the variants such as Omicron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal government had contracted to purchase the monoclonal treatments. In the contract it bars other entities such as hospitals and doctor\u2019s offices as well as states from purchasing in what DeSantis has called the government\u2019s \u201ccornering the market\u201d on the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2021 state budget DeSantis set aside $1 billion to go towards purchasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a> treatments, PPE, and any other related expenses associated with the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA\u2019s announcement included estimated data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the Omicron variant is responsible for more than 99 percent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#monitoring-varaint-heading\">cases<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore it\u2019s highly unlikely that COVID-19 patients seeking care in the U.S. at this time are infected with a variant other than Omicron and these treatments are not authorized to be used at this time,\u201d the statement from the FDA said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement went on to say that withdrawing the treatments would avoid \u201cexposing patients to side effects, such as injection site reactions or allergic reactions, which can be potentially serious, from specific treatment agents that are not expected to provide benefit to patients who have been infected with or exposed to the Omicron variant.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4070958\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/10\/27\/HYA7NCS4IBCWZMSPWEBYXG7PXM.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"592\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4070958\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HYA7NCS4IBCWZMSPWEBYXG7PXM-600x444-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ron DeSantis\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gov. (Courtesy of Governor\u2019s Press Office)<\/figure>\n<p>The FDA suggested other therapies such as Paxlovid, Sotrovimab, Veklury (Remdesivir), and Molnupiravir.<\/p>\n<p>According to the drug administration these treatments are authorized and approved to treat patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms who are at high risk for \u201cprogression to severe disease\u201d and who may end up hospitalized or dead.<\/p>\n<p>It also advises the \u201cauthorized treatments are not a substitute for vaccination\u201d and boosters are \u201crecommended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData has clearly demonstrated that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/covid-19-vaccines\">available, safe and effective vaccines<\/a>\u00a0can lower your risk of developing COVID-19 and experiencing the potential associated serious disease progression, including hospitalization and death,\u201d\u00a0 the FDA website went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>However, DeSantis said the majority of people infected with the Omicron variant are vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet they\u2019re still infected and many of them are high risk\u2014they\u2019re pulling the rug out from under people on a single, non-peer reviewed, non-clinical study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s Surgeon General Dr. Joe Ladapo said the FDA\u2019s action came \u201cwithout advance warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our field of medicine when someone comes to you seeking a treatment that could save their life it is essential to have treatment options to ensure health care providers can make the best decisions for their patients,\u201d Ladapo said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Ladapo went on to say that the FDA has \u201cfailed to adequately provide the United States with adequate treatment options for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow they are scrambling to cover up a failure to deliver on a promise to \u2018shut down the virus,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4233901\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/01\/25\/monoclonal-antibodies-1200x799.jpeg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4233901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/monoclonal-antibodies-600x400-1.jpeg\" alt=\"monoclonal antibodies\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A Regeneron monoclonal antibody infusion bag. (Joe Cavaretta\/South Florida Sun-Sentinel via AP)<\/figure>\n<p>The governor\u2019s office said it believed the \u201cabrupt\u201d decision by the Biden administration was made with unsupported clinical data to support \u201csuch a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis believes the decision made by the administration was \u201cdeliberate,\u201d as the announcement was made via a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had months and months and months to stockpile this, and they chose not to do it,\u201d DeSantis said at the press conference. \u201cI think part of it is there\u2019s politics at place.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201c\u2026 part of it is they don\u2019t have enough treatments to go around\u2014they realize that it would look very bad to be able to admit they so instead they are saying this is revoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis prevents states and health care providers from making real-time operational decisions that save lives,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>The governor went on to say that during the pandemic that scientist and researchers from across the United States have \u201cworked hard to bring treatments that are both safe and effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of these treatments has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-monoclonal-antibodies\">monoclonal antibodies<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cThis treatment has saved thousands of lives in Florida and across our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\">\n<div class=\"top_row\">\n<p>Follow<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jannis Falkenstern is an Epoch Times reporter who covers the state of Florida.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Gov.
