Washington DC Attorney General Karl Racine said:&nbsp;\u201cGoogle falsely led consumers to believe that changing their account and device settings would allow customers to protect their privacy and control what personal data the company could access. Attorney General Karl Racine stated:&nbsp;\u201cGoogle falsely led consumers to believe that changing their account and device settings would allow customers to protect their privacy and control what personal data the company could access. The truth is that contrary to Google\u2019s representations it continues to systematically surveil customers and profit from customer data.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Racine claims that Google\u2019s privacy practices are \u201cbold dispensations\u201d that actively undermine consumer privacy. Racine\u2019s office began investigating Google\u2019s use of user location data following a report from the Associated Press in 2018 which found that many Google apps on iOS and Android continue to record user location data even when users have disabled the tracking in Google\u2019s privacy options.<\/p>\n<p>The AP reported at the time:&nbsp;\u201cGoogle\u2019s support page on the subject states: \u2018You can turn off Location History at any time. With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored.\u2019 That isn\u2019t true. Even with Location History paused, some Google apps automatically store time-stamped location data without asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is far from the first time that Google has faced lawsuits over user privacy. Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2022\/01\/24\/texas-lawsuit-google-engaged-in-false-advertising-for-smartphones\/\">recently reported<\/a>&nbsp;that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Google earlier this week, claiming that the tech giant sked local radio DJs to record endorsements for Google\u2019s Pixel 4 smartphone despite not providing the DJs with the phones or allowing them to use them.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton previously sued Google in December 2020, alleging alongside a number of other states that Google was running a digital advertising monopoly alongside Facebook. Google called the claims in the lawsuit \u201cmeritless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/04\/12\/texas-antitrust-lawsuit-claims-google-rigged-its-ad-exchange-against-competitors\/\">court documents<\/a>&nbsp;filed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/radio\/2021\/02\/24\/texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-we-think-our-antitrust-lawsuit-against-google-will-succeed\/\">Texas antitrust lawsuit<\/a>, Google for years operated a secret program that used data from pat bids in the company\u2019s digital advertising exchange to give its own ad-buying system an advantage over competitors.<\/p>\n<p>The recently filed lawsuit by Washington, DC, Texas, Washington state, and Indiana alleges that Google developed a location tracking system that is impossible for users to opt-out of and misled users about how their devices\u2019 privacy settings operate. The lawsuit further accuses Google of using deceptive dark pattern design to trick users into making choices against their own interests.<\/p>\n<p>Racine\u2019s office is pursuing an injunction against Google and seeking to force the company to pay out profits that were made by misleading users about their privacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Lucas Nolan is a reporter for Breitbart News covering issues of free speech and online censorship.
