While the United States has long drawn nurses from abroad, she said demand from American health care facilities is the highest she\u2019s seen in three decades. There are an estimated 10,000 foreign nurses with U.S. job offers on waiting lists for interviews at American embassies around the world for the required visas.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This medical migration of nurses and doctors \u201cultimately is about the money\u201d for the medical sector, said Kevin Lynn, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/doctorswithoutjobs.org\/author\/klynn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctors Without Jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;article admitted the central role of economics in the healthcare migration with a headline saying: \u201cRich Countries Lure Health Workers From Low-Income Nations to Fight Shortages.\u201d That\u2019s a sharp break from the newspaper\u2019s usual migration coverage, which overwhelmingly focussed on migrant family dramas rather than economic impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe medical establishment, just like any other corporation, is looking for efficiency \u2014 faster, cheaper,\u201d said Lynn, who campaigns for American medical graduates who lose vital training slots in government-funded residency programs to imported foreign medical graduates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19616362\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2022\/01\/GettyImages-1349889231.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19616362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/GettyImages-1349889231-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"660\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The New York Professional Nurses Union hosts a light projection and evening cheer for nurses at Lenox Hill Hospital on October 28, 2021 in New York City. (Astrid Stawiarz\/Getty Images for Unbendable Media)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the employers\u2019 desire for imported foreign doctors and nurses is also a labor-rights and healthcare quality issue, he added. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about them being less expensive \u2014 it\u2019s about them being more pliable because they\u2019re chained [by their conditional visa] to the employer.\u201d Without citizenship that allows them to live and work in the United States, the imported nurses, doctors, and therapists cannot argue against cost-cutting policies by the executives who have the legal power to send them home.<\/p>\n<p>The failure to train and hire Americans for nursing and doctor jobs also leaves fewer nurses and doctors for poor people in the developing countries, such as Zambia, according to the <em>New York Time<\/em>s:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeople are leaving constantly,\u201d said Ms. Mwape, whose inbox is flooded with emails from recruiters letting her know how quickly she can get a visa to the United States.&nbsp;The net effect, she said, \u201cis that we are handicapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the most-skilled nurses that we lose and you can\u2019t replace them,\u201d Ms. [nurse Lillian] Mwape said. \u201cNow in the I.C.U. we might have four or five trained critical-care nurses, where we should have 20. The rest are general nurses, and they can\u2019t handle the burden of Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Dr. Brian Sampa, a general practitioner in Lusaka, recently began the language testing that is the first step to emigrate to the United Kingdom. He is the head of a doctor\u2019s union and vividly aware of how valuable physicians are in Zambia. There are fewer than 2,000 doctors working in the public sector \u2014 on which the vast majority of people are reliant \u2014 and 5,000 doctors in the entire country, he said. That works out to one doctor per 12,000 people; the W.H.O. recommends a minimum of one per 1,000.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">This government-enabled, employee-run extraction process ensures that both the people in developing countries and Americans lose quality care, and many Americans lose healthcare careers, Lynn added.&nbsp;\u201cWealthy Americans probably aren\u2019t seeing this [replacement], but people on your typical bronze and silver plans are, and certainly the people who don\u2019t have access to health insurance are seeing this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The coronavirus crash has highlighted the hidden process of healthcare extraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Business groups and their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ejtaub\/status\/1484609306205040645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration lawyers<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/06\/19\/business-asks-for-endless-supply-of-foreign-healthcare-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long argued<\/a> for rules that would allow them to import an unlimited number of low-wage healthcare employees. \u201cThe [annual] cap [of 85,000 work visas] should be repealed altogether for the healthcare sector, as it is for the university and non-profit sector already,\u201d advocate Daniel Griswold&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2eYDNGz5_Bc?t=2131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;the House committee on small business in 2019. Griswold is a director at the Koch-funded Mercatus Center in Arlington, VA. The demands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/03\/21\/coronavirus-1200-young-doctors-sidelined-by-lack-of-training-residencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">got louder<\/a> during the coronavirus crash but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/05\/13\/democrats-coronavirus-bill-imports-more-foreign-doctors-nurses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went nowhere<\/a>&nbsp;while President Donald Trump was in office.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">President Joe Biden\u2019s deputies are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2022\/01\/22\/biden-invites-more-foreign-workers-take-americans-white-collar-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opening more doorways<\/a> for employers to hire foreign white-collar workers \u2014 despite rising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/06\/17\/american-medical-grads-to-trump-halt-h-1b-j-1-visas-no-shortage-of-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public concerns<\/a> about the loss of many Fortune 500 jobs to corporate-recruited H-1B visa workers. (Karen Ducey\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In November 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahcancal.org\/News-and-Communications\/Fact-Sheets\/Letters\/Coalition-Letter-State-Immigration-Nov2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hospital sector asked<\/a> President Joe Biden\u2019s deputies to accelerate the visa review process for foreign nurses.&nbsp;Since 2011, the Department of State\u2019s embassy in Manila has annually processed roughly 30,000 requests from Filipino nurses and healthcare aides to get work permits or green cards prior to taking U.S. healthcare jobs. Under Trump\u2019s curbs, the process had dropped to 8,982 requests in 2020, so opening up many jobs at high wages for American nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Many Americans have quit the medical sector in 2020 and 2021 after many months of fighting the coronavirus diseases. The resulting workforce gaps have been partly filled by American professionals who had retired before the disease, by military doctors, and by contract nurses who travel from place to place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Employers are also being forced to pay higher wages to American nurses who keep working even as roughly 20 percent of their peers quit the sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/covid-travel-nurses\/2021\/12\/05\/550b15fc-4c71-11ec-a1b9-9f12bd39487a_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the employers\u2019 complaints about supposed price \u201cgouging\u201d on December 6:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\">The continued pandemic; an aging,&nbsp;<a title=\"www.washingtonpost.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2021\/10\/15\/nurses-covid-morale\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11\">burned-out<\/a>&nbsp;and retiring nurse workforce; the return of hospital services that were shut down last year; and a shortage of foreign recruits and nursing students have combined to make travel nursing one of the most critical and sensitive issues in health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\">\u201cOf all the things that keep CEOs of hospitals up at night, this is the key one,\u201d said Chip Kahn, president and chief executive of the Federation of American Hospitals, which represents about 1,000 for-profit facilities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In contrast, nursing groups are blaming the employers for not recruiting, hiring, and training enough young Americans, according to the <i>Post\u2019s<\/i>&nbsp;article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThis current staffing crisis is one of the hospital industry\u2019s making,\u201d Deborah Burger, president of National Nurses United, said in a written statement. \u201cThey need to take a long hard look at how their treatment of permanent staff and exploitation of the nursing ethos has inevitably led to this unsustainable model of staffing hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Hospitals must train more people for nursing jobs, Professor Joanne Spetz at the University of California, San Francisco, told the Marketplace.org <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2021\/09\/07\/high-pay-for-traveling-nurses-a-symptom-and-cause-of-staff-shortages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radio show<\/a>&nbsp;in September 2021. \u201cThat really is then shifting this emergency [coronavirus response] thing into the long-term investment philosophy \u2026 and that\u2019s really where we\u2019re going to have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">There are millions of Americans who can be trained and paid to do healthcare jobs. Total nonfarm employment in the U.S. is now just under 149 million.
