Walter Hickox then dives at the predator and pushes it back through the door as it swipes at his back. Once the bear is off the porch, he moves a bench to the entrance to keep the animal out of the residence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God! I just got attacked by a bear,\u201d he yells.<\/p>\n<p>His injuries were non-life-threatening, and the bear did not harm the dogs, the FWC said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hickox spoke with WFTV about the wild incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a lot went through my head at the moment, other than what\u2019s going to happen if he gets past me and into the house where the rest of my dogs and my wife was at,\u201d Hickox explained.<\/p>\n<p>His neighbor, Elliot Michael,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2022\/01\/20\/fwc-looking-for-black-bear-after-man-attacked-at-daytona-beach-home\/\">told<\/a> WKMG that bears frequent the area, and it seemed the predator was a mother with her cubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooked like a mom protecting one of her cubs. Cubs rifle through the garbage, they went away. Mama bear went back, then the dogs start barking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>A trap was set up outside of Hickox\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFWC says they\u2019re going to continue their efforts to find the bear,\u201d said Mark Lehman of WKMG. \u201cThe agency saying, If captured it\u2019s their policy to humanely kill the animal because it poses a threat to human safety.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar incident, a black bear attacked a DeBary woman named Aydee while she walked her dog on January 13. She \u201csuffered non-life-threatening injuries, including scratches on her face, hands and back,\u201d WKMG reports.<\/p>\n<p>Her dog was uninjured, and the bear was captured and killed.<\/p>\n<p>The FWC provided several tips for individuals when encountering a bear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t run; running may trigger a chase response. Back away slowly in the opposite direction and wait for the bear to leave.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFrom a safe distance, make loud noises to scare away the bear.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGive the bear a clear escape route (do not corner it).\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf the bear makes contact with you, fight back aggressively.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf your dog and a bear make contact, make noise and use bear spray or a water hose to try and break them up.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe FWC receives up to 6,000 bear-related calls a year and have documented only 15 incidents of people being moderately to seriously injured by bears\u201d a press release from the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/news\/all-news\/bear-incident-122-1\/\">states<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shocking video shows the moment a Florida man fought off a black bear on his porch, saving his dachshunds.
