Last week, though, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2021\/2\/5\/22268632\/carjackings-operation-safe-pump-chicago-police-officers-grocery-stores-shopping-centers\">the Chicago Sun-Times reported<\/a>, the Chicago Police Department announced a partnership with \u201cOperation Safe Pump,\u201d a program that organizes gas stations and private security to create \u201csafe\u201d times and spaces so that Chicago citizens who live on the city\u2019s south and west sides can refill their fuel tanks without fear of losing their vehicles in the process.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one major problem: the \u201cepidemic\u201d of carjackings is not limited to the city\u2019s southern and western neighborhoods, and most carjackings are not taking place at service stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to CPD data,\u201d CWB notes, \u201cChicago recorded 218 carjackings in January \u2014 but only nine of those took place at gas stations. And only 86 of last year\u2019s 1,416 carjackings unfolded at service stations, records show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The carjacking epidemic has other unique characteristics. Most notably, many of the latest CPD carjacking suspects are teenagers, <a href=\"https:\/\/wgntv.com\/news\/more-carjackings-overnight-as-chicago-police-lay-out-plan-to-tackle-crime\/\">per Chicago\u2019s WGN<\/a>. \u201cAccording to officials, the suspects range in age from 15 to 20, but the youngest they have seen was 12 years old. The motives include joyriding and using the cars to commit other crimes such as robberies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of a national trend, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/carjackings-skyrocketed-parts-country-pandemic\/story?id=74674597\">according to ABC News<\/a>, which notes that a number of cities apart from Chicago are also experiencing a dramatic uptick in the number of carjackings. Experts seem to believe the coronavirus pandemic is to blame. A would-be carjacker wearing a mask does not stand out in a city environment, and young adults who are not in school but whose parents work are being left with little to do all day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe social service sector has ground to a halt,\u201d one expert told the network. \u201cPeople can\u2019t do in-person contact. Kids are out of school and don\u2019t have programming to go to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then, there\u2019s the summer\u2019s \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement which, one expert told ABC, created \u201creal uncertainty around what police are expected or allowed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With police tuning out and juvenile offenders given ample opportunity, the result, the same exert said, is a \u201cperfect storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Police Department says its working on solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCPD plans to to add enough staff so there can be a dedicated carjacking team in each of the five detective divisions throughout the city,\u201d Chicago police told WGN. \u201cThe department said they\u2019re also working the Cook County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s Office to focus on stronger prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
